Gears of War Film in Trouble?

Rumour has it that the film adaptation of Epic Games’ Gears of War is in quite a pickle. according to the LA times, if the film ever makes it to the big screen it may bear only a passing resemblance to the games we know and love.

Not only has the film’s budget, scale and story been scaled back considerably, but it’s lots lost its director as well.

Len Wiseman, director behind the Underworld films, Live Free or Die Hard has apparently abandoned plans to direct the film, instead opting to do an apocalyptic flick called “Nocturne.”

The budget – once cited to be $100 million US is now about a buck fifty. Gone too is the “sprawling epic” the film was meant to be, with the screenplay now trimmed to be a more run-of-the-mill invasion story. Sounds like the film – should it ever be made – will be yet another video game adaptation that’ll be monumentally rubbish.

What’s next? are they going to replace the chainsaw-equipped lancer with a potato gun with a steak knife duct-taped to it? Are the locust going to look like extras from Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Charmed?

Len Wiseman seemed to have a genuine interest in the property, and it’ll be sad to see him no longer attached to the project. It’ll also mean that the likelihood of his rather fetching organic sausage wallet, Kate Beckinsale, appearing in the film draws close to zero, making me even less interested in the film.
