I’m one of the guys who doesn’t really focus that much on Destiny’s Crucible mode. Unless it involves the Iron Banner, because daddy needs some Etheric Light for his armour upgrades.
The Crucible is a serviceable mode in Destiny, filled with the standard death-match modifiers and whatnot. It’s also a mode that has never really interested me that much at all really because if I wanted to have people yell obscenities in my general direction, I’d go visit my family.
Which is why I’m kind of curious to have a proper round or two in the new multiplayer modes that will accompany The Taken King expansion. You’ve heard Alessandro giggle on about them already, as Mayhem and Rift look like a mad kind of fun.
And those Crucible modes are getting tarted out next week, as Bungie revealed in their weekly update:
If you’ve bought Destiny, whether you’ve pre-ordered The Taken King or not, we’re sending you into the Crucible to experience new modes of battle on every brand new map. One thing to note: You won’t have the use of your new Super abilities yet.
You’ll have to visit your class Vanguard in The Taken King to earn your new subclass. For now, though, you can and should check out the new slate of maps on offer, and two of the new modes.
The Crucible Preview Event will take place from September 8th to September 14th. Go and get yourself an early taste of some Rift! And follow it up with a heaping helping of Mayhem!
Once Oryx arrives in our Solar System, the new Crucible content will become the sole property of those Guardians who pick up and continue playing The Taken King. This is your chance to try before you buy – or download.
Think of it as your own personal E3 or gamescom, only it happens at home on your couch.
If you really want a personal E3 or Gamescom experience along those lines, I suggest inviting an entire rugby team that has skipped the showers for a week to come watch you play, but they all have to sit on the same couch.
Destiny had a lengthy server update yesterday, most likely in anticipation of these new modes being beta-tested previewed. So who’s up for a round of Mayhem next week? BRING IT.
