Graphics “indistinguishable from reality " in 10 years

But that doesn’t mean they’ll “feel” real. Speaking at Develop, Epic’s Tim Sweeny is pretty confident that we’ll have graphics that look like real life within the next decade

However, that just creates a greater challenge. Creating worlds that actually feel real is going to be an ongoing process, and it’s quite ostensible that computer generated worlds will never truly approach realism.

"That just moves the challenge of graphics to the problems we don’t know how to solve. Like simulating human intelligence, animation, speech, lip-syncing. There are still a lot areas that will require ongoing research for probably the rest of our lives before we come close to approaching reality.’

When it comes to games, I really don;t care how long it takes for them to be real; the last thing I want is uber realism in my escapism. I am, however, on board for better AI, better animation, better effects – things that will help me believe that the fantasy world in front of me is real, instead of an imitation of the one I already live in.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
