How Your Mass Effect Save File Will Affect Mass Effect 2

We have already heard that our actions in Mass Effect would render consequences and alternate paths for our characters in Mass Effect 2, but how would it all work out and what can we expect?

Casey Hudson, lead producer of Mass Effect 2, has come out and explained more about how it will all work out, in an interview with PC World. For starters he had the following to say:

“When you’re playing the first game, everything that you do is setting a variable so that as the story progresses we know that you did a certain thing on a certain planet, and then internal to the game, we can reference those things,”

It seems like these guys are going to need to take a lot into account. More after the jump.

Hudson goes on to explain that the information is not merely based off of your ending, but pertains to “literally hundreds of things”. To further explain the depth of the information, he says that “Anytime we have a plot or a character or situation in Mass Effect 2, we think about what you did, potentially, in the first game that might affect said plot or character or situation in the second. We can look at each variable and dynamically change what happens in the moment.”

It sounds like these guys really have a grand plan in place to finally make our in-game decisions actually count for something, unlike most games where at best you will get a different ending.

Hudson gives us an explanation of an encounter from the first Mass Effect that could affect the experience that you have in Mass Effect 2, saying the following:

“Conrad Verner was a fan of Commander Shepard’s that you met in the first game, and it’s like you meet this guy in an alley and you can be nice to him or you can be a jerk to him, and at the time you might have been thinking of it as just a trite role-playing convention, good-guy bad-guy, and that’s that.”

“Jump forward two years. Now you’re playing Mass Effect 2, and oh my god, who’s this, it’s Conrad Verner! And based on what you’ve done, you realize that while the moment in the first game maybe seemed throwaway, now Conrad’s back and involved in another plot in a game you’re playing two years later…and what you did two years ago is meaningfully affecting what’s happening. That’s a small example.”

Now one question I have is that I played the game through once and then played about 10 – 15% into the game again as a completely different type of character. Will the game give us the option to choose which save games we can use?

What about the guys that didn’t play the first game? I sincerely hope that they at least put in one of those old-school questionnaires that will allow them to give answers to specific scenarios that they might have been in.

  1. Hey cool, I hope they talk about me killing that bug race… bugs bigger than you must die, period. 😛

you porlly find your character would need to have finished the game and yes Id imagine you would pick your hero, otherwise I’m sure they would have default ‘pasts’ for people who did not play the first one.
