inFamous gets a new release date – Now coming a month earlier

I don’t know if this is good or bad news to be honest, Sony has announced over the easter weekend that the upcoming PS3 exclusive, sandbox, electrically enticing inFamous has received a release date push and is now going to be hitting the American shelves on the 26th May.

And presumably ours around the same time.

This is about a month ahead of schedule which doesn’t happen often and to me smacks of them being scared of Prototype. If they were confident that they had the better game then they could use the extra month to polish the game up some more and really ensure that they hit the market with the best game they could.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Eurogamer released that preview which implied the game wasn’t really finished yet which makes this even more surprising.

I am pretty terrible at choosing which games are going to be great but maybe my knack is knowing which games are going to be bad. inFamous is going to be okay but will quickly be eclipsed by Prototype.

The release date all the online retailers had was 4 June, so this is only a week or two earlier than expected.

Perhaps they are not ‘scared’ of Prototype but mindful of the fact that third-parties also want to sell games. Everything I’ve read points to inFamous being the better of the two.

But hey, don’t let all of that stop you from spinning it into bad news.

inFamous blinked first in this overly hyped match up and for that they are now behind. Added to that is that early previews are not glowing and there is very little reason to think that inFamous is going to come out better in the end.

But on the other hand maybe they have stolen a move on their competitors by getting way more media attention?

I bet you that Infamous will score more highly on Gamerankings and Metacritic than Prototype – I’d say at least 5-10% higher. I reckon Prototype will come in at the early 70s, Infamous in the early 80s (similar to Crackdown)./

The Internet is just full of negative previews for the game:

“inFamous looks fantastic and Cole, the game’s main character, animates fluidly through the decimated ruins of Empire City (Garnett said it best in last month’s preview, that it channels Escape from New York). Other characters in the game, including the bystanders, don’t look quite as good yet, but another texture pass before it comes out in June should turn this into a good-looking action title.”

“Back in December, I put up the first ever hands-on report of Infamous. In it, I called the game “awesome” and went as far as telling you that you’d “need to buy it.” After playing three more hours of Sucker Punch’s latest, I’d like to amend one of my statements. Infamous is f’n awesome. ”

“Based on what we played, Infamous is coming along nicely. The game seems to be doing a fine job of balancing style and substance with impressive visuals, engaging gameplay, and a meaty story. While there’s still the expected assortment of rough edges, they’re mostly overshadowed by the potential on display. The sense of freedom when you’re going about your business, the intriguing story, and being able to mix up your powers and interact with the city are compelling draws. Infamous is slated to ship later this year for the PlayStation 3, so look for more on the game in the coming months. ”

“I’ve been itching for a great open-world game since I beat Crackdown and began weaning myself off hunting agility orbs. GTA4 satisfied a certain need, but I’ve been waiting for another great game that allows me to effortlessly leap from a skyscraper with reckless abandon. It looks like Infamous could be that game. The four sections I played a few hours ago demonstrate a game that looks polished and plays quite well. Prior to my first hands-on, I was interested in Infamous. Now I’m excited. ”

I have wanted to create a ‘betting’ table of some sort ever since I realised my predictions were completely wrong..

I just worry about the legality of it all to be honest.. I will try look into it again and can then maybe take you up on that bet

That would be great Lazy! A prediction table, but it must be public. So people can see who predicted what.

Along with me. I tend to enjoy all the flops more
    than the “successful” games :ermm:

    Just looks more bad-ass 😉
    Plus, I don’t have a PS3 anyways,so it doesn’t really matter
