Riot have done a lot over the years to make League of Legends one of the prettiest MOBAs. Them random critters, that shiny water… it’s the sort of stuff that brings tears of joy to my eyeballs while I farm in-lane or roam around the map. Some competitive players on the other hand, find all that pleasurable viewing distracting however, prompting Riot to add an option that can remove it all.
What? I’m not even kidding. Here’s the official announcement by Riot JxE over on the League of Legends forum (via PC Gamer)
Recently we added an option to the Game tab in the menu called “Hide Eye Candy”. Some of our more competitive players requested the the option to hide some of the less subtle movement on Summoner’s Rift. We added the option to disable things like butterflies, dragonflies and the water wakes to help competitive players focus on what they care about, the gameplay.
Only ambient critters that persist after 1:55 will be disabled by this option. You can continue to perfect the dark ritual necessary to spawn the Duck.
Nothing ruins my game more than casual butterflies up in my face! And those water wakes? Don’t even get me started on how many kills I’ve missed because those patterns drew my attention away! At least the duck is still there, although it’s something I’ve yet to see with my own two eyes. (Also, what ritual are they talking about? Anybody care to enlighten me in the comments section?)
Feedback in the forum is mixed. Some people are applauding this inclusion, while others, like me, think it is ridiculous. How distracting can visuals REALLY be?

This is a pretty basic thing every game should have. It’s the reason most SC2 pros never played on high settings.
But this is riot, they do it way too late, and who the hell cares with all the ridiculous particle changes they do?

It’s not that it looks too pretty. It’s that there is too much irrelevant noise which is of little to no gameplay value.

I can maybe understand in the competitive circles as I only play games for enjoyment, but the gaming community has become a who can bitch the loudest contest.

I do this on planetside 2. I drop all the settings. Though not the same as here it does help when you are looking for moving pixels when sniping.

People here are acting like they have never seen pro Quake players…
It’s perfectly normal.
It does not affect you, so why care.
Anything to bitch about eh?
