Everytime a new sandbox game comes out, someone always loves to shout “GTA killer” and most of the time it’s just a lot of crap.
Mafia 2 could be different. You see, what a lot of people don’t realise is that in many ways, the first Mafia did many of the things that GTA4 is being praised for now and will always be one of my personal best games that pretty much no one played. The story was clever and believable, the world was interesting and the missions were well thought out and the best part is, you didn’t have to babysit your friends every five minutes.
The game world was a serious place, cops were ruthless and you would get into trouble for something as small as running a red light. Cars had fuel that could run out and missions were really tough. Granted, it wasn’t what you were looking for if you were out for ramping rivers and causing massive explosions but it felt solid and it was scarily immersive.
I am always skeptical when sequels are announced to games that I love because I am always scared that the developers are going to try too hard to improve on the first game and in turn, destroy what made it great in the first place.
I am really looking forward to Mafia II though, if the original is anything to go by, this game is going to be legendary.
