Kojima Productions have confirmed, via their Japanesey blog, that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will have an optional install. This is, as far as I can recall, the first PSP game to feature the ability to install portions of the game to Memory Stick.
We at Lazygamer aren’t big fans of installs – optional or mandatory – on consoles. They detract from the essential “put it in and play†ethos of home consoles – but when it comes to handheld systems, it’s just gone too far.
Install size will vary depending on the two that are offered, with the smallest being 300Mb and the biggest at 800Mb. They’re purported to to decrease load times as well as smoother gameplay response. On the one hand, I’m glad Konami are actively looking at producing better experiences on Sony’s handheld, and that the installs – for now – are optional. On the other, I’m afraid this is a portent of installations for portable games becoming more common – something that may lead me to abandon my PSP for good.
Kojima’s second stab at a portable MGS title sneaks up on the Japanese public tomorrow, with a June release in the west.
