Microsoft discontinuing 20GB Model?

Secret Rumour The one thing that I still love about E3 is how it seems to make all the insiders leak secrets in the run up to it.

It does however sometimes feel that they are just trying to get some publicity.

Arstechnica has received a tip from one of their secret insiders who has said that Microsoft are going to be dropping the 20GB from their future lineup and going with a 60GB model instead.

Now honestly I don’t see the point in doing that at all and it sounds like something a disgruntled PS3 fan has made up.

What would be a lot more logical is for Microsoft to start selling more Xbox 360 harddrive accessories at a much more reasonable price.

The vast majority of people won’t need more than 20GB on their consoles and for the heavy users there is the Elite… Then if they released a 80GB drive for R400 it would solve the middle users problems…

So I call BS on this one.

Mole: Microsoft to drop price on 20GB 360, make room for 60GB

Agree with you. I’ve got 10 gig free on my 20 gig, and that seldom changes, even with demos etc.
Luckily the 360 is roxor enough not to need any installs.

Why would a disgruntled PS3 fanboy have made it up ?

because I find it odd that the size of the drive in the rumour is identical to the PS3 one…. I don’t believe in coincidences

That makes no sense ??!! I think it would more than likely been made up by an xbot who’s whiney about 20GB being too little space and the 120GB upgrade being horribly overpriced

You got to remember hilt, PS3 = Fanboyism. Finish and klaar. There ain’t no such thing as a 360 Fanyboy. That’s like trying to convince the ANCYL that black people can also be racist.

What if the manufactures want to discontinue making 20GB hard drives. Considering that the entry level laptop hard drive is 80GB.

Anyway this rumor started from another rumor that the 360 Pro that is going to be selling at $299 as from July.

possibly but it doesn’t benefit the 360 fanboy point of view..

Again this is why I like rumours, everyone has an opinion and now that we put them in the database we can always come back and prove that hindsight is perfect…

I place my bets on this just not happening, I also say it was invented by a PS3 fan… The first part will be a black or white answer while the second is an opinion that will never be proven either way.

@kabraal, Of course you get 360 fanboys, I think Fox1 and doobiwan are proud fanboys… we even have a local Wii fanboy.

Regardless, u can’t even put cool content on the 360 HDDs, last time i checkt u can’t even transfer ur own videos, pics, mp3s (u have to rip every CD. 60gbs for just demos & trailers isn’t worth it.

I’m standing in the not-BS camp on this one. I also think that HDD manufacturers want to discontinue making 20GB 2.5″ Hard Drives.

Of course, should they choose a 60GB, some PS3 fanboi is going to call out that MS is “copying” Sony.

Unless you’re “renting” movies of the Video Marketplace there is little need for more than 20GB. MS have pretty much locked down the HDD for only Live content.

If the 20GB hard drives are getting discontinued then prepare for specials on the 360 20GB hard drives 😉

This isn’t as BS as you say. It makes perfect sense in the international market where they are downloading movies, demos, xbox originals, storing music and pictures much more than we do. 20gb is too small for this IMO. In addition to this a 60gb HDD is probably cheaper to produce now than the 20gb HDD as 20gb is old tech. Plus its all about consumer perception. Most consumers are NOOBS and when they see xbox360 has a 20gb HDD and PS3 has a 40/60/80 HDD they’ll go for the PS3. So many people even think that the size of the HDD determines how powerful the console is!!!

In short: this makes sooo much sense and would be a brilliant move by Microsoft.

No need, you can stream everything from your PC to Xbox360.

it’s always better having EVERYTHING on the system. Worse off i’d need the Wi-Fi adaptor if i had a 360 in that case anyway. Thanx but no thanx, the whole point of extra storage would be the benefit of having everything in 1 place, clutter free.

I don’t think it’s BS either, although 60Gb is a bit of an odd number, I would have expected an 80Gb, just from PC HDD prices.

Anyway, it feeds into the “E3 Big Bang theory” Microsoft have played it quiet so far this year and want to make the most impact. New Games, new Live, new 360’s I suspect they’re going to announce them all.

I would rather use my pc as central storage since it can do much more than any console. Why put everything on your console in the first place, you can’t even burn any DVD’s or mp3 cd’s with it?
Also, my WiFi ADSL router is right next to my TV so I just plug it into the Xbox via network cable, I bought a WiFi card for my computer. Problem solved.

Well ur situation is not the case for every1 bud, my PS3 is upstairs & router downstairs … without wi-fi? wouldnt an HDD storing the vids,pics,mps3 i require be much simpler? 🙄

no one was comparing what a PC and do as opposed to a console. lol, ur mentioning DVD burning etc is irrelevant.

That was tong in cheek you bafoon.

This is all simple econimics. 20GB HDD won’t stay on the market forever. I highly doubt MS will continue to order special 20GB HDDs if they can get 60GBs+ for cheaper. Simple really..

Everyone uses their PC for storing pics, vids, ect. What a PC can do VS what a console can do is VERY relevant since what use is it storing your pics on console when you need to copy it to a computer to print it? I can give you a long list of advantages storing things on PC over storing things on a console. What about video formats, can the PS3 play real-media videos?
Console storage is only good for the things you diretly download off the PSN or XBL, nothing more.
And don’t roll your eyes at my bud, your the one thats being stubborn. 🙄

You don’t need media center to stream vids to your xbox360. Just get media player 11 and your set.

“Console storage is only good for the things you diretly download off the PSN or XBL, nothing more.”

Seriously that’s BS and you’re the being stubborn. It all depends on the user and like Tan pointed out to you, not everyone runs a PC 24/7 ready to stream. I think we can all agree that watching videos, pictures or listen to music is way better on your TV and Hi Fi than huddling around your PC screen. Especially if you’re going to show it to a group of people.

Yes a PC can do more but in my personal situation where I only have a notebook, I don’t want to pull out the ol notebook every time I want to watch a video or listen to music (especially if I’ve left it at work). Thus far I have about 20GBs of A/V stuff stored on my PS3.

If I have to storage, I find it highly redundant to stream stuff from my PC. In my personal situation I find it easier to dump all my important A/V stuff straight to my console HDD while managing it every 2 months or so.

It all depends on the user. If you have a PC running 24/7 in your home ready to stream, streaming is for you. If not, that extra HDD on you console adds a lot of value.
