I played the original Punch Out! on NES. I remember my brother even insisted on having a cooling cloth nearby so he could cool his hands after some matches. In the original release of the game, Mike Tyson was the end bosse, and was one horrible boss to face. So could Mike Tyson beat Mike Tyson?
On a recent episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Mike Tyson got to play that famous game, with an incredible six lives. Did he manage to knock himself out? Spoiler alert: no, but it’s fun to watch him try.
For the non-YouTube people, head on over here to watch.
I think it’s hilarious that Fallon got Tyson to do this. Just imagine how many other games could be fun to watch if the final villains had to fight themselves. Granted, most of our games have fictional villains these days, but I still think it could be quite cool, unless it meant having Sauron in your studio for a TV show.
Did you guys play Punch Out! as kids, or only recently on Virtual Console? I did both, and I was amazed to remember just how difficult that game is. Old school games were so unforgiving, making it a big deal if you finally managed to beat Mike Tyson. I think I did it once, but that could just be the rose-tinted glasses that I wear when remembering classic games.
