The next generation of consoles are pretty much current (mid-range) PCs in term of architecture – but according to EA, they’re a generation ahead of even the highest-specced current gaming PC. that’s according to EA’s Chief Technology Officer Rajat Taneja – who took to LinkedIn (of all places) to extol the virtues of the next generation of consoles.
He says that the architecture and lower level access make the next gen systems “one (?) of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics”.
“Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have adopted electronics and an integrated systems-on-a -chip (soc) architecture that unleashes magnitudes more compute and graphics power than the current generation of consoles,” Taneja says
“These architectures are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market and their unique design of the hardware, the underlying operating system and the live service layer create one of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics. Our benchmarks on just the video and audio performance are 8-10 times superior to the current gen.”
So next-gen will be ten times more powerful than current gen, and more powerful than high end PCs. Is this dude on crack, or does he know something we don’t? For reference, Epic’s Mark Rein has called “bullshit” on the statement.
While I have no doubt that the next consoles will treat us to some arresting eye-candy, saying that it’s “a generation” ahead of high end pc’s is just stupid.

Not until they have Physx :), I am still forced to run my 660ti for physx and do my main rendering on my amd card. I am a big AMD fan though 🙂

Not particularly no, figure my PC just ignored the mod while theirs started lagging worse than a dial-up modem.

haha very true 🙂 when i ran only my 660ti physx killed the card it almost made it pointless :). They should just sell the physx cards separately again.

Physx and more oooomph for the midrange consumer. High-end AMD cards are superior but it’s also costly and power hungry.
Lord Chaos
May 24, 2013 at 13:44
On costly I’ll agree, they really aren’t that power hungry though. Not in my experience anyway.

Even if the next gen is a gen ahead of PC. People should realize that the games wont have that big of a leap in eye candy. It will take the developers some time to catch up on the new hardware architecture and how to use it in its full glory.
