Nintendo terminates Swapnote due to underage sexting

Maybe I’m just a Nintendo/3DS n00b, but I had no idea there was even such a thing as Swapnote/Nintendo Letter Box. This application lets 3DS users exchange notes and drawings over the internet through the use of SpotPass. Well, apparently it was being abused and has been destroyed.

As it turns out, a range of consumers including minors were using Swapnote to exchange “offensive material”. Nintendo went on to say:

Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused.

Fair enough – I’m glad Nintendo is doing their part to make sure that kids aren’t sexting and sending appropriate pictures to each other. Last thing the world needs is for the 3DS to be used for kiddy porn. I just can’t stop picturing hand-drawn penises being sent around, because that’s about how mature I am.
