I got close up and personal with Popcap’s third person, class-based shooter Plants vs Zombies: Garden warfare, and I found it utterly charming. Think of it as Team fortress with PvZ characters and super powers, and you’re on the right track. It’s coming, for now at least, exclusively to Microsoft platforms early next year.
Popcap’s said that the Frostbite 3–powered shooter will be hitting the Xbox One and Xbox 360 on 20 February in European territories. And because it’s a multiplayer-only affair, it’ll be coming at a cheaper price too. The Xbox 360 version will cost half of what your standard AAA game costs these days, while the Xbox One version will be a third more expensive than that. It is quite possible also riddled with microtransactions, but I’m hoping that that’s not the case. Plants vs Zombies 2 was a perfectly functional game that could be completed without having to spend anything, but the whole system seems to have robbed the game of its charm.
There’s a PC version in the works too, but no word on when that will be available. Unfortunately for those who favour Sony’s machines, there’s been nothing announced. Nobody’s said there’ll be any set exclusivity – so let’s hope it’s timed, because this is the sort of fun everyone should be having.
Here’s a 9 minute developer walk-though with Popcap’s Brian Lindley, explaining what makes the game so much fun.
