So yesterday I told you about some of the insane gouging going on from EA – overcharging on digital distribution and fleecing people simply because they live in a different country. Now, it seems that digital version of games are more expensive, particularly if you have a PS4.
Maybe Xbox One was more ready to go fully digital than the PS4, at least their games are priced more reasonably. Here are some differences in prices thanks to Video Gamer:
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

- Battlefield 4

- Call of Duty: Ghosts

- Xbox One = £39.99
It was starting to look like EA were the main culprits, but no, the games are simply more expensive on PS4. Is this because they are paying more for their cloud services? Or maybe because they just assume the console war is so strong that people won’t be comparison shopping across platforms. Why would a game like Battlefield 4 have a difference of £8? That’s R130 or almost $13 savings simply by buying Xbox One. Sure, the console is more expensive, but maybe this is part of their way of leveling the playing field? Either way, it would still be cheaper to go with retail – Amazon UK is selling PS4 and Xbox One copies of Battlefield 4 for £47 (R767).
All in all, this digital distribution malarky is looking like a serious mess. I’m just wondering who is doing the gouging – should we blame the publishers, or do Sony and Microsoft have a role to play in this? So far, it seems that we should carry on doing what we’ve been saying for a long time – supporting local retailers. They are actually saving you money, and without them, we’d be totally at the mercy of these fat cats.

Rome II Total War was the same price for me when I went in and was given the option. Maybe it’s title (or format) dependent then. But I still don’t understand their pricing and then Steams? It seems.. so.. arbitrary. I suppose Valve just takes a bigger slice of the pie since they reach a bigger audience. But you’d think that would bring the price down? I dunno.

I have stopped buying console games because of the cost, regardless of where I buy it. I have also decided to wait on the new consoles and may not even buy. Will see when they are actually here and know more about them… (have XB right now). I mostly buy PC games now (except GTA recently)..and even then I wait for a Steam sale unless its something I really want..

yeah, Digital Distribution still has to hit it’s stride on console. on PC with services like steam and sites with digital distribution rights like Humblestore and Greenmangaming, and Amazon, if you sort out that address issue, And sales everywhere, it’s very easy to find a AAA new release for much cheaper than console versions. I still maintain that Digitally Distributed games SHOULD be cheaper than physical disks, I mean, it’s not like you’re paying for a sexy box or anything, just the game.
