PS5 Teardown: An up-close and personal look at what’s inside the console

PS5

The PlayStation 5: It’s an absolute unit, it’ll be home to several exclusive games that I’d commit war crimes for and there’s still so much about it that we know nothing about. There’s a mystery on that next-gen console, one that Sony is finally and partially lifting the lid on in a new breakdown video. I’ll add more talking points below, but for now, take a closer look at the behemoth!

  • 104mm wide, 390mm high and 260mm deep.
  • The front has a USB-C port and a type-A port with hi-speed USB support.
  • The USB-C port has Superspeed 10Gbps specs.
  • The rear of the PS5 has two type-A ports, a LAN port, an HDMI port, and a power port.
  • The two rows on the front side are air vents.
  • The entire rear side is an exhaust port.
  • The vertical base is attached with a small screw.
  • Removed screws can be stored in the base.
  • The stand can be attached to the side of the PS5 with clips, and then used to rest the console on its side.
  • The white panels can easily be removed.
  • There are two dust catchers on the side, which cab be easily vacuumed up.
  • For future storage expansion, M.2 interface with PCi 4.0 support is installed.

  1. I was kind of expecting the video to fade to black (and start the Skyrim intro) when he took out the motherboard, but damn, it really is the pinnacle of console engineering and design principles. They clearly took note of people’s concerns about overheating (lol Microsoft), dust accumulation (lol Microsoft), noise… etc. Every part of its form has function, there’s a reason for everything. It’s not just a big black box….

Wow, Sony… I think you really out-did yourself.

    Absolutely beautiful!

If only it was that big, you could use it for temporary housing.

A gaming behemoth and a home – as opposed to the Xbox series X which might just be another heating unit disguised as a console.

I’ve said it before, when Microsoft was desperately trying to keep up with Apple (back when Jobs kept them on their toes and their designs were amazing). The designers at Microsoft need to up their game. It’s not just about having something to play on, you need to at least put in the effort to make it pretty i.e. aesthetically pleasing. Ask our PC brethren, who not only spend hours on their PCs, but also modding the outside, to create a true work of art and engineering.

Now I’ve definitely got an idea of how massive it is. Now I’m worried about the Xbox Series X. If Sony had to resort to something so big to assist with cooling, I believe MS’s box is smaller but more powerful, and will most probably be generating far more heat than the PS5, so I can believe the reports that the console gets hot!!! My gut is telling me we are going to be having a problem with the Xbox’s cooling abilities, especially for me as I will be pushing the console to its limit considering I can run 4K/120Hz games on my TV.
