Rumour: Captain America: The Winter Soldier's Anthony & Joe Russo to direct THE AVENGERS 3 and 4

3 min read

Whether or not Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Marvel’s best offering to date may still be up for debate, but there’s really no doubt when it comes to which of the movies in Marvel’s stable has the best filmed action scenes. Employing an unexpected grounded realism that saw bone-crunching fist fights, jaw dropping physical stunts and exhilarating car chases replace pew pew lasers and cartoon brawls, co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo upped the action-ante for all other superhero movies. And according to a new rumour, they may just get the opportunity to show off those skills of theirs again, but on the biggest stage Marvel has.

While reporting on yesterday’s big news of Robert Downey Jr. joining Captain America 3 for “Civil War”, the usually very reliable Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest added that the Russos may just be one of the links between Cap 3 and The Avengers 3 and 4.

How closely will Captain America 3 tie in with Avengers 3? I’ve been told that the Russo Brothers are in talks to direct Avengers 3 and possibly 4. Sources tell me that they’re the favorites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige want to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.

If Kevin Feige is the architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then Joss Whedon is his lead building contractor, and it’s sort of just been assumed up until now that the Avengers movies – the biggest, most complex films that Marvel would make – would always be Whedon’s responsibility to build up. But based on the absolutely overwhelmingly positive response to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, both critically (89% on RottenTomatoes) and commercially ($714 million global box office haul), having Whedon hand over to the Russo’s makes a lot of sense. The fact that Feige and the rest of the Marvel higher-ups already trust them with the Civil War storyline – something that will no doubt change the current Marvel Cinematic Universe like nothing else before it as well as shape the landscape for everything to come – already shows just how highly regarded they are over at the House of M.

Besides, doing these types of movies takes a massive toll on the person behind them, and recent rumblings have indicated that the super-lengthy production on The Avengers: Age of Ultron has left one tired Joss Whedon who may want to just step away from it all for a while. But even if he does hand over the reins, I highly doubt he would be out of the picture completely though, as he is still under contract with Marvel to act as their go-to guy whenever they need to tweak a scene or just build up an idea.

And for those of you who watched the much more serious and dramatic Winter Soldier and are now thinking that that trademark Whedon wit would be sorely missed in The Avengers 3 if the Russos were to take over, you would do well to remember that one of the reasons that the brothers were such left-field choices to direct Marvel’s first real action-thriller, is because they had previously been known only for comedy. A script, with Whedon’s input, directed by the guys behind some of the funniest episodes in Community‘s history is definitely not such a bad thing to do.

And even if the Russos don’t get the gig, but Whedon really still wants to hand it over to somebody else, I see that Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn has a whole lot of free time on his schedule after 2017.

I wouldn’t have any issues if this were true.

Talking purely about the movies I assume? 😉
