Rumour: Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Batman in JUSTICE LEAGUE? Could we see him even earlier?

If you’re a DC fanboy then I suggest you move up laundry day, because based on how this week is going, you’re going to need some clean underwear. Just yesterday, we had Zack Snyder sort of backtrack on his statements from a year ago, when he hinted at the fact that Man of Steel may just be tying into and laying the groundwork for Warner Bros’ Justice League movie in 2015.

Now a rumour has surfaced that a certain The Dark Knight Rises actor may be showing up again dressed like a giant flying rodent. And he may do it sooner than you think.

Now, this warning might be a tad bit too late, but clearly this story involves some heavy SPOILERS for the end of TDKR. However, it’s been 5 months since that movie released and if you’ve somehow managed to stay spoiler free since then, then clearly you’re actually not reading this because you are in fact a hermit who lives on a mountain with only a cranky old goat for company.

Now for the rest of you, you may recall that at the end of director Chris Nolan’s final Batman film, Batman sort of fakes his own death in order to ride off into the nuclear bomb sunset. But before he disappears though, he leaves the proverbial keys to his old Batcave – along with all his bat-goodies – to one Robin John Blake, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a cop and fellow orphan who worked out Bruce Wayne’s secret identity.

At the time, Nolan really meant it as nothing more than physically showing what Bruce Wayne had stated earlier in the movie: That Batman was not a man, it was an idea. And it looks like some folks over at Warner Bros might possibly have thought it was an idea to make more money.

Drew at HitFix, who is usually very reliable in these kinds of things, is reporting that his sources have informed him that JGL “absolutely will be appearing in Justice League as the new Batman.” It seems that despite Chris Nolan’s claims to the contrary, Warner Bros have actually realized that that final scene could be a good jumping off point to ensure that they wouldn’t have to reintroduce one of their main characters when Justice League rolls around. It makes perfect creative and business sense, and with so many people already clamoring for JGL to don the cape and cowl, they’ve already got quite a few supporters of the idea.

But – DUHN DUHN DUUUUUHHHHHNN! – here’s the plot twist: Drew’s sources indicate that not only is Warner Bros looking to set up deal with JGL, they’re also targeting somebody else from Nolan’s franchise, and that these two are in negotiations to shoot “something” before Justice League releases.

For that “somebody else”, I think it’s a fair bet that that would be Gary Oldman’s Commissioner Jim Gordon. Besides for Alfred, he’s the only other person that makes sense, but since Alfred retired his butlering ways in TDKR, it makes sense for Jim to pop up. Now as for the “something” that he would be popping up in, it’s probably not a movie, as work on a new Batman flick would have started before now, and that’s a secret that would be just about impossible to keep.

But a post-credits scene for Man of Steel where a certain Caped Crusader and his police friend decide to go investigate this big blue alien boy scout that just showed up in Metropolis? That’s definitely something that could be done, and would be a great lead in to Justice League as well.

Now remember, all of this is still speculation based on the claims of one unverified (but reliable in the past) source. But if Warner Bros does do this, expect there to be condoms handed out at those initial screenings for Man of Steel because some fanboys are about to jizz in their pants.

6 months ago, I would definitely have said “no”, but if Nolan’s Batman trilogy and Justice League end up being in the same continuity, then it would definitely be an easier sell. Especially considering how many people were asking for exactly this after the end of TDKR.

Agree with you on this. For an idea to move forward from the loop we keep experiencing, this could be a new chapter… I think I might like it.

Just imagine JGL does play Robin John Blake Batman and gets into shit and they get Christian Bale to come save the day as Batman again.
          Damn.
