It has been a weird week. Right now, not even the flash floods of Johannesburg can compare to the amount of tears drowning staff at an American university from students as we now face four years of one of the most powerful nations in the world being led by that chap who was handy with directions in Home Alone 2.
Throw in various other calamities, deaths and the fact that while a person may be intelligent people as a group are still otherwise horrible, and you’d kind of just want to escape it all. Some days, you just want to jump into your baggiest of pants and on to a plank supported by four wheels and hit some tarmac. It’s something I’d do right now, if I didn’t have the equilibrium of a drunk kitten. Fortunately, there’s always the digital equivalent of skateboarding.
And double-fortunately, there’s Skate 3. Which is now backwards compatible on Xbox One at long bloody last. Microsoft’s Major Nelson confirmed yesterday that Skate 3 and some other game called Scarygirl have now been added to the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility line-up on the eve of its first year in action. That brings the total number of games released so far up to 280 already. Not bad.
I’ve waxed lyrical about Skate 3 before, and I’m going to do it again. It’s the polar opposite of the Tony Hawk franchise, favouring more street-level flips and grinds around the nifty use of the analog sticks to pull such sweet tricks off. If Skate 3 were an actual master of the board in real life, it’d be Rodney Mullen. A deck wizard who still pulls off new and incredible tricks to this day after having spent decades on the streets.
If you’re keen on adding Skate 3 to your library, you can do so for cheap right now as Xbox Gold Subscribers can purchase it for under a hundred Randelas. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go grab my trusty skateboard out of storage and but-scooch out of this week into the sunset. While listening to some Sum 41. Becaaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuse I’m in tooooo deeeeeeep…

I’m a big fan of Skate 3. It’s one of my favorite PS3 games. Whenever I get free time I play Skate 3.
