South Africans excluded from Evolve’s Big Alpha

No Evolve for you

So late last night I saw a new Evolve trailer hit the interwebs and the most exciting part of all was at the end they teased that there will be a closed Alpha at the end of this month open to PC, PS4 and Xbox One owners.

To get a guaranteed entrance into the Alpha you can pre-order the excellent looking Evolve or you could head over to the Evolve website and enter a comp in the hopes of winning a voucher. Well that is unless you are on the list of 14 countries who 2K have deemed to have insufficient infrastructure to enjoy the game.

And yes we are on the list of excluded countries because the useless government and Telkom combined have still not been able to roll out proper infrastructure in the country even though we are were the powerhouse of the continent.

But don’t feel too bad we are joined by those other powerhouses like Brunei, Philippines, Oman and China. Wait China? Well the Chinese problem seems to be more political as the other ones banned are Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic… is that even a country?

Also the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are also denied access. Unfortunately what this probably means is that Evolve will play as well as Titan Fall in South Africa and if someone says something again we could end up not even getting the game released locally. The 2K Games rep for our region is in South Africa for rAge and Evolve has a prominent stand at rAge so make sure you ask the people manning the stand why we are hated and aren’t allowed to be part of the Alpha and will it effect the game’s eventual local release?

Oh and before you leave, make sure to take a look at what we aren’t allowed to enjoy at the end of the month… my pleasure.

Oh but if like the rest of South Africa you aren’t so concerned about rules and laws then just change your region to UK and use one of these codes to enter. No guarantees that it will work, but the game is bucket loads of fun so it’s worth a shot.

PlayStation 4 – 63334-59648-17396
Referrer Code – PlayStation4v1
Thanks PlayStation Blog

Xbox One – 08347-97365-66457
Referrer Code – EVOLVETOWIN
Thanks VentureBeat

PC – 71687-90535-46031
Thanks PCGamer

Apparently that Xbox One code works on all platforms so you know what to do to get the most entries.

    Well that sucks.
Hopefully we don’t have a repeat of the Titanfall fiascos (yes that is meant to be plural).

Online is the future. A nice all-inclusive future, with sunshine, rainbows & always-online games where everyone is happy. So amazing.

Unless you don’t have good infrastructure or broadband, in which case…

Our Internet is only part of the problem, server proximity is the big achilles heel of online in SA.

Titanfail used Azure (we have no Azure servers). Evolve uses steam servers as far as I know so the proximity would be MWEB most likely. Therefore I sorta disagree.

Forcing people to be online is just as bad as forcing them to be offline. It can never result in the optimal experience for the consumer. If you want people to willingly go online make your online offering so good that they can’t refuse. This can never be achieved if you only host servers in the EU and NA.

Agreed, maybe they can throw some of the subscription fees paid by SA gamers towards that.

It’s too bad they exclude us, hopefully we can get in on the Beta? These days the Beta plays better than any game that releases anyways.

I’m not going to lodge a complaint like I did with Titanfall, but unknowing people are going to be PISSED when they realize servers are hosted 200ms away! I would honestly thought a game like this would have opted for peer 2 peer protocols rather.

Gavin have you played? Is it bearable? How twitchy is it?

Well for this one I’m hoping we at least get local PC servers as we aren’t reliant on Azure.

      Worried about consoles though

Let’s hope for some freedom of hosting for PC at least. Anything to diversify our local PC scene to something other than Battlefield and Dota. We’ve got such an engraved culture of mono-gaming here.

I asked my friend, Chris, why he only played Dota, his response? “I don’t play games, I play Dota.”

I’m just putting it out there right now, anyone that pulls a fkkn-Titanfall-bitchy-whining-motherfucker-infrastructure-moan online, I will find and kill these bitches.

    That is all.

EDIT: Ok, to be fair no actual bitches will be killed, but the equivalent rage is still the same.

      I’m right here dude. 🙂

Though I think this is definitely going to suck for consoles, that’s if PC gets local options, otherwise its a no go for everyone.

Oh we do know, hence the ridiculously obvious warning …

I cannot express in words how fkkn angry I was when that shit went down, and now stirrings of this shit happening again with Evolve… Obviously, I won’t be killing actual bitches, but consider it “the feel” I want to convey to @Bluegoon and others that feel some moral duty to prevent future game releases in SA, all based on something we cannot do shit about – infrastructure.
