Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick thinks the PS4 and Xbox One will outsell last generation’s consoles within five years. This prediction comes after a good start to sales for both consoles this week.
It took the PS3 and Xbox 360 eight years to sell 160 million units combined. Zelnick thinks the PS4 and Xbox One can do it in just five.
I’d specifically say yes because it appears that–and this is largely anecdotal but tablets are a good example–all these new iterations of more and more exciting hardware seem to have picked up in velocity generationally compared to five or 10 years ago
Perhaps to hedge his bets a little bit, he also added:
But if we had a big market meltdown, for example, a repeat of and in three years, or two years, or two minutes, that would influence it. But if this economy stays on this track, yeah, I feel good about it.
Zelnick also said that Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K Games, has a plan for moving into next gen without any hitches; Take-Two plans to buy back all of its shares in the wake of GTA V’s success. Thus far, they have acquired 10% of the shares with rumour circulating that they may become a private studio once the plan is completed.
I think as the consoles become cheaper and more games that people actually want to play release, this prediction is far from exaggerated. Only time will tell.
