The de-evolution of Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero and Scorpion

2 min read

There’s always two things that you can rely on in a Mortal Kombat game: Horrific violence and ninjas. Although having a face that would make the Ghost Rider jealous and being a walking fridge might not make for the stealthiest of skillsets, it just wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without Sub-Zero and Scorpion making an appearance. They’re series staples and they’ve been around since the beginning of the franchise. And their growth has been pretty interesting over the years.

Halloween Costumes put together a nifty look at the timeline of the gruesome twosome, charting their journey from the original Mortal Kombat, the sequels, Deadly Alliance and all the way through to Mortal Kombat X. I’ve always been a Scorpion fan when it comes to Mortal Kombat. Call me old-fashioned, but the franchise icon has always had some of the best moves, combos and special attacks, due to him being Ed Boon’s favourite character.

I’m also digging how his design makes him look like a ninja again, instead of the balls-crazy focus on having him resemble an anthropomorphic version of his spirit animal. Now somebody explain to me what the hell that thing was that came out if his hand in the first Mortal Kombat movie.

In other news, I may have gotten the game early, ahead of those other reviewers. Yeah, this sneaky review copy looks totally legit:

Something wrong gentlemen? You come here prepared to read the words of a madman, and instead found a lunatic obsessed with comics, Batman and Raul Julia's M Bison performance in the 1994 Street Fighter movie? Fine! Keep your bio! In fact, now might be a good time to pray to it!
