The Gears of War series sells over 19 million units

Yesterday, for those of you unaware, was the 6th year anniversary of Emergence Day, the release of the original Gears of War for the Xbox 360. A title, many would say, that defined this console generation.

Since that day the series has sold nearly 20 million units, says Joystiq. It seems each of the titles in the series has now sold over 6 million units, with the latest, Gears of War 3 – which Microsoft says is "the biggest game of 2011"  reaching former Epic designer Clifford Bleszinski’s sales target of "definitely over 6 million."

There’s a new Gears of War coming next year in the form of a prequel, Gears of War: Judgment, co-developed by Painkiller and Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly.  The prequel, which focuses on Baird and Cole, will be hitting your Xbox in March next year – and I’m keen to see what People Can Fly brings to the series. I’m pretty happy to see the back of Marcus Fenix for a while as well; he was starting to become a caricature of himself.

For comparison’s sake, it looks like The PS3’s flagship series, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series has done pretty similar numbers, selling 15 million copies across the series by the middle of this year; that, coupled with Gran Turismo 5’s impressive sales figures of over 9 million should hopefully put paid to the perception that PS3 exclusives don’t sell.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
