The guys who made one of the best Xbox One games won’t be able to play it

2 min read

The Witcher 3 is an incredible achievement, and one of our best games from E3 this year. It’s coming to PC,  as well as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when those systems launch later this year. Unfortunately, the developers themselves, CD Projekt Red and its considerable home-town fanbase won’t be able to play the Xbox One version at launch.

Why not? Well, because they’re from Poland. And Poland – like South Africa – is not within the list of 21 countries that’ll be graced with the Xbox One during its initial launch rollout. It’s come as a bit of a shock to CD Projeckt Red – who had no idea that this would happen.

"I was just in a restaurant and saw the list," Co-founder and CEO of the company Marcin Iwinski told Gameinformer. "I was surprised, and I really hope that it isn’t final. I think Polish gamers will speak out loud. From my perspective, it’s a sad situation."

Essentially, it’s a case of “Thanks for the awesome game, here’s a boot to the ass.” We’ve had some time with the Xbox One at E3 – and it’s an amazing console with some great games. Unfortunately, it’s being walled up by some policies that just don’t make it an appealing option, especially here in South Africa.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

  • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

    Yup, better stock up folks

    • RitterBruder

Bite the pillow ! Microsoft is going in dry !

    • Weanerdog

Or ….. you can stock up on one of these

    • Sageville

I dunno, The Xbone can be usefull…

“Xbox, turn on my Playstation 4”

      • Vampyre Squirrel

Xbone: “I’m sorry Sageville, but you have used an unrecognized command, please try again”

  • Tbone187

Wonder what the criteria was to make the list…Surely MS has been approached with this question…

  • Danny Baromen

    Wow… M$ is definitely on a run of #Fail…

  • Purple_Dragon

I am just getting more and more baffled with the decisions coming from Microsoft. I just find it hard to believe some of the decisions, it doesn’t make any sense. What do they know that we don’t know?

I am also not too impressed with the arrogance coming from them. I mean hell I read an article this morning where a microsoft biggie said if you don’t have internet just buy the XBOX 360? Wow, that is really arrogant.

  • Wtf101

Is there no one at MS reading all the negative shit people are spewing and going: “Hang on boys, I think we might be missing it this time around…”

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

They have been. They made an announcement that they are sticking to current policies but may consider to change after launch depending on “customer feedback”

I don’t know why they can’t just start now

      • Happy Hamster

may consider to change after launch<———- Now which launch we talking about 2013? 2014? 2015? depending on where you stay hahahahaha

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      • Wtf101

Maybe because they are still hoping it (Xbone sales) takes off like mad and can go “See, we told ya! Nothing to fret about.” I can tell you though, from all I have read so far, getting and Xbone is not on my list, really. I am a current gen Xbox fan, but as the Admiral said, better stock up, If you are planning on getting an Xbone

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Yep. They really are shooting themselves in the foot. Something about doing something to the something to spite the something else or whatever

          • Wtf101

My late brother had a saying, and it kind of sums up what MS is doing: “Hulle speel nou met ‘n honger leeu se stert…”

          • Trevor Davies

or like my old boss used to say, “As jy dom is moet jy kak.”

          • Argentil

I think something of that is lost in translation. Or do dumb people need to poop a lot?

          • Trevor Davies

lol, it means you must suffer the consequences of your own stupidity.

          • Argentil

Hah, not bad. Afrikaans has some of the best phrases.

          • HvR

That is a bit like the subtitles on certain Afrikaans movies.

Ek gaan jou bliksem dat die kak nat spat jou f*kk*n PO3S!!!

I’m going to hit you fool!

          • Argentil

I dare say, old chap, I’m going to have to bludgeon you with my fist. And I will continue to do so until you defecate yourself repetitively as a result of bowel incontinence, you poor example of female genitalia.

I missed the part about dry spat or something. My afrikaans isn’t up to scratch.

          • HvR

kak nat spat – the involuntary release of free flowing feces

          • Vampyre Squirrel

Not bad for someone with afrikaans that isn’t up to scratch.

          • Argentil

Ja, just don’t ask me to speak to language. No one wants to hear that. You will probably need a shower afterward.

    • Turd Ferguson

You have to remember, we’re not Microsoft’s target right now. Microsoft assumes their core fanbase will follow along like good little robots. They assume they already have you. For all the bluster and outrage that’s been spoken since the reveal, Microsoft’s betting that it won’t matter when it comes time to pay up for the next-generation.

No, Microsoft is targeting those who HAVEN’T previously purchased their console. Casual family types, home theater types etc… which, does represent a MUCH larger demographic, however, those types of folks won’t be ‘as’ interested in the games, as much as the media functionality (where applicable).

The same situation has ocurred in games themselves, World of Warcraft would be the best example I can come up with. It started off in a certain way, and regardless of the people who actually play and comment upon changes/future patches in the pipeline, they continue forward with things like Battle Pets, and making the game more accessible…because they’re willing to accept the loss of a few original players, if it means bringing a few million newer more casual players in.

Long story short, they don’t care. It’s really that simple.

  • Wtf101

Gods, I hope that M$ is not going to be as bad as cANCer on the News24 comments…

  • Hammersteyn

    Um… Deal with it?

  • Argentil

The tone of their response was one of shock. I’m sure this would damage CDProjekt RED’s relationship with MS. They obviously have local fans who would anticipate this game. They now have to tell their polish fans to buy it on PC.

    • Turnip

Nah, they tell their fans to buy a PS4.

    • Johan du Preez

They will tell everyone to buy it on pc rather as their main focus is pc and then consoles, they are very vocal about this fact …

  • Jakster

OMW!!!!!!! People Can Fly are also Polish. Not cool…

    • Argentil

As funny as that is, they make poor games anyway.

      • Jakster

Bulletstorm was cool but mindless but still cool.

        • Argentil

But mindless. Mindless, with merit. I acknowledge that. Still, not my cuppa.

  • RithHeart

    MS’s best poo-idea.
This is why you should never hold in a fart.

  • StevenGad

“…Xbox One at E3 – and it’s an amazing console with some great games”

    Bitch please!

    • It really ia…and it makes me sad. Cos the way things are going, I’m never buying one.

      • Argentil

PC is the way to go this gen. PC + PS4 + WiiU in that order of importance. Mark my words, we’re going to see PC ports all over the place this gen. The infrastructure is so similar, it’s wasteful not to port it over. I put Sony and Nintendo as close 2nd and 3rd because there are a number of unannounced titles still cooking from Sony, and they have the most high-end development studios. Ninty is 3rd, maybe even 2nd because they will definitely pull it back.

        • Jakster

          Too true.

      • Rinceyouropinion

You and me bother boet. You and me both.

      • OVG

Most Journos are ditching the shit and will be reviewing 3rd party games on the PS4 to save the hassle.

        It is a still born.

  • Ryanza

Microsoft’s response to fans in Poland waiting to play The Witcher 3 on the Xbox One, is to go play The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360.

  • Rinceyouropinion

Some chop was trying to stick up for the list earlier, stating that it was compiled so that there wouldn’t be any technical issues. The last time I checked Poland wasn’t situated in the arse end of fucking nowhere. This blows.

    • Argentil

I reckon there’s a second wave of countries coming up soon. Japan, Poland and SA can’t be ignored until after late next year. I mean, it wouldn’t make sense for them to do that…

      • Rinceyouropinion

lol, and sense is their middle name 🙂 Xbox Nonsense

  • Unavengedavo

I think if M$ had told them that they weren’t planning on launching in Poland as well, they would have made it a PS4 exclusive game

  • OVG

Good point. This is the start of the end for 3rd party support for the AMERICAN ONLY console.

    • Turd Ferguson

You forget, Microsoft has deep, deep pockets. And is in a far better position to purchase exclusivity/timed exclusivity from developers than Sony is. So I think much of this generation is going to be like the last gen, where Microsoft will purchase exclusivity of certain IP’s.

I think this Gen, Sony needs to go bullish with those developers however. Instead of making developers add additional content after the timed exclusivity is up, simply say, any content released exclusively for a competitor, whether timed or not, will never be welcomed on the PS4, and if the sales disparity of the PS4 vs One is as extreme as it appears. We may just see the death of 3rd party exclusives. Win-Win in my opinion.

  • Iblis

And this shit is why I stick to my PC. Never owned a console, never plan on doing so. That way all I have to rant about is always-on DRM. 😉

  • matthurstrsa

Xbox One is very quickly becoming the Internet Explorer of consoles. Both made by Microsoft. Interesting…
