The guys who made one of the best Xbox One games won’t be able to play it

The Witcher 3 is an incredible achievement, and one of our best games from E3 this year. It’s coming to PC,  as well as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when those systems launch later this year. Unfortunately, the developers themselves, CD Projekt Red and its considerable home-town fanbase won’t be able to play the Xbox One version at launch.

Why not? Well, because they’re from Poland. And Poland – like South Africa – is not within the list of 21 countries that’ll be graced with the Xbox One during its initial launch rollout. It’s come as a bit of a shock to CD Projeckt Red – who had no idea that this would happen.

"I was just in a restaurant and saw the list," Co-founder and CEO of the company Marcin Iwinski told Gameinformer. "I was surprised, and I really hope that it isn’t final. I think Polish gamers will speak out loud. From my perspective, it’s a sad situation."

Essentially, it’s a case of “Thanks for the awesome game, here’s a boot to the ass.” We’ve had some time with the Xbox One at E3 – and it’s an amazing console with some great games. Unfortunately, it’s being walled up by some policies that just don’t make it an appealing option, especially here in South Africa.

I am just getting more and more baffled with the decisions coming from Microsoft. I just find it hard to believe some of the decisions, it doesn’t make any sense. What do they know that we don’t know?

I am also not too impressed with the arrogance coming from them. I mean hell I read an article this morning where a microsoft biggie said if you don’t have internet just buy the XBOX 360? Wow, that is really arrogant.

They have been. They made an announcement that they are sticking to current policies but may consider to change after launch depending on “customer feedback”

I don’t know why they can’t just start now

Maybe because they are still hoping it (Xbone sales) takes off like mad and can go “See, we told ya! Nothing to fret about.” I can tell you though, from all I have read so far, getting and Xbone is not on my list, really. I am a current gen Xbox fan, but as the Admiral said, better stock up, If you are planning on getting an Xbone

You have to remember, we’re not Microsoft’s target right now. Microsoft assumes their core fanbase will follow along like good little robots. They assume they already have you. For all the bluster and outrage that’s been spoken since the reveal, Microsoft’s betting that it won’t matter when it comes time to pay up for the next-generation.

No, Microsoft is targeting those who HAVEN’T previously purchased their console. Casual family types, home theater types etc… which, does represent a MUCH larger demographic, however, those types of folks won’t be ‘as’ interested in the games, as much as the media functionality (where applicable).

The same situation has ocurred in games themselves, World of Warcraft would be the best example I can come up with. It started off in a certain way, and regardless of the people who actually play and comment upon changes/future patches in the pipeline, they continue forward with things like Battle Pets, and making the game more accessible…because they’re willing to accept the loss of a few original players, if it means bringing a few million newer more casual players in.

Long story short, they don’t care. It’s really that simple.

The tone of their response was one of shock. I’m sure this would damage CDProjekt RED’s relationship with MS. They obviously have local fans who would anticipate this game. They now have to tell their polish fans to buy it on PC.

PC is the way to go this gen. PC + PS4 + WiiU in that order of importance. Mark my words, we’re going to see PC ports all over the place this gen. The infrastructure is so similar, it’s wasteful not to port it over. I put Sony and Nintendo as close 2nd and 3rd because there are a number of unannounced titles still cooking from Sony, and they have the most high-end development studios. Ninty is 3rd, maybe even 2nd because they will definitely pull it back.

You forget, Microsoft has deep, deep pockets. And is in a far better position to purchase exclusivity/timed exclusivity from developers than Sony is. So I think much of this generation is going to be like the last gen, where Microsoft will purchase exclusivity of certain IP’s.

I think this Gen, Sony needs to go bullish with those developers however. Instead of making developers add additional content after the timed exclusivity is up, simply say, any content released exclusively for a competitor, whether timed or not, will never be welcomed on the PS4, and if the sales disparity of the PS4 vs One is as extreme as it appears. We may just see the death of 3rd party exclusives. Win-Win in my opinion.
