The Last of Us sells 3.4 million, hailed as a success

Naught Dog’s The Last of Us is an incredible experience, and one of the very best games of this generation. Sony’s now confirmed that they’ve sold 3.4 million copies as of 3 July – making it the fastest selling PlayStation 3 game this year.

3.4 million just under a month is not bad at all, and pretty much matches the performance of the recent Tomb Raider reboot – which Square Enix considered to be a bit of a flop, highlighting the fact that their expectations were perhaps just a tad high. Of course, it’s worth noting that Tomb Raider was released on 3 platforms while the Last of Us was exclusive to just one – but I think it’s all balanced by the fact that the Tomb Raider figures did not include digital copies, while these The Last of Us figures do.

Sony worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is pretty pleased with The Last of Us’ performance.

“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us,” he said “The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that.

“SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.”

We thought The Last of Us was pretty darned good – and if you haven’t played it yet, you really should. Beg, steal, or borrow – but make sure you play it.

I think they should leave it as is and not make it into a franchise. I mean look at Deadspace for example… Deadspace 1 was fantastic. Until the other 2 came along and it just didnt catch me as much as the first one.

It is the best game of this gen and one of the few to up the bar but how is it they get to budget properly where as a multi platform Tomb Raider gets shunned for selling 4million?
The production values look 3x more than Tomb Raider yet they already made profit.

Multiplatform development would have cost a lot of money. They also went silly overboard with the marketing budget, imo. TLoU had quite a lot of marketing exposure, but TR was all over the place for a longer time.

Because Lara was on my telly ever evening for about a month in the prime time slot… She was falling all over the place!! And if they spent that amount of money in our back water country can you imagine what they spent on marketing over the world? Naughty Dog just let their game market itself, and oh boy did that work!!!

I suppose Tomb Raider had allot to prove after the last few games and try to educate us about the Nathan Drake re-boot. I would have done the same, now the marketing budget for the next Raider will not have to be over the top as they have proved themselves.

Naughty Dog on the other have an untarnished record. Good for them.

Naughty Dog was part of the core tech group (called ICE) that Sony put together (with Cerny) to get an advanced toolset and knowledge of the PS3 architecture. All of Sony’s stuff was kept internal, which is why 3rd parties have struggled so much and Sony’s first party devs keep on chugging along.

There’s an article on a speech Mark Cerny had recently (maybe 1-2 weeks ago), he discusses it as one of the major flaws in Sony’s thinking with the PS3.

You also need to remember that many people who buy consoles want the system for sports games. That and a game like TloU wouldn’t appeal to the casual market, of which most of the consoles also belong to.

“their storytelling capabilities are second to none” – That is all this article had to say!! I have played the 3 Uncharted games more than 3 times each, I absolutely love the stories that they tell!! I get lost in their worlds with the great acting and story lines!! Naughty Dog is probably my favourite games company!!

Irrational Games, Rockstar and the now defunct Looking Glass Studios were/are also epic story tellers. I think where TLOU excels though (storyline is a given win) is how the gameplay really fits into the world. It feels visceral and realistic.
