Torbjorn is destroying Overwatch on console

We’ve all done it. Don’t sit here and pretend like you haven’t tried the six Tjorborn strategy. While this was a phase during beta and upon launch, the six Torbjorn strategy soon faded on PC as he became extremely easy to deal with, but it seems console players continue to run 5-6 Torbjorns making it extremely infuriating for the opposing team. On defense you can block off choke points and abuse the fact that your opponents are using a control to try quickly shoot down your turrets. Naturally this is near impossible when there are several on the field since when you kill one, another will take you down. You may ask, why don’t you just run it yourself? Well, where’s the fun in that? It’s extremely boring and really a waste of time.

Reddit user Bzimbardi expressed his heart-felt contempt in a long post about how Torbjorn has ruined Overwatch for him and many of his friends who would often play all day and night. It then seemed like a common problem on both Xbox One and Playstation 4 as commenters also expressed their concerns on Blizzard’s response, if there is any?

“My friends list has been slowly evaporating every time I login to Overwatch, and even people I picked up from this sub and their friends who I got by proxy are logging in less and less. We used to play until 3:30 am every damn day. Everyone is still online – but they’re off playing different games. Intermittently, just by picking up RL games or stopping into party chats, it’s the same story OVER and OVER and OVER. Nobody wants to play anymore because it is literally 4-6 Torbjorns on every defense. Hell, a lot of teams are taking him on offense now”

The numbers also speak for themselves. According to Master Overwatch, a statistics recording site, there is a somewhat notable disparity between Console and PC when it comes to Torbjorn .

Torbjorn’s winrate:

  • Xbox One – 68.4%
  • Playstation 4 – 69%
  • PC  -59.8%

While this is not a huge difference, as expected, 10% is still enough to consider him overpowered to say the least. Having aim assist means nothing when you’re dealing with several turrets placed in choke holds, and there’s also the consideration that Torbjorn’s auto-attack and ultimate are extremely strong, especially when there are five on the field. It makes any push attempt near impossible, and if you’re able to breach the point or capture the payload, you have to do it all over again.

Tjorbjorn also has a much higher Kill to Death ratio on Console, and this proves that he is an absolute nightmare to deal with.

Torbjorn’s K/D:

  • Xbox One/PC difference – 10.2%
  • Playstation 4/PC difference – 12.4%

This is essentially means that on console players are getting over 10% more kills compared to deaths. While this may not seem like a lot, it is worth consideration noting that Torbjorn is the strongest hero on Console. Our only hope right now is that Blizzard include a specific nerf to Torbjorn on Console, perhaps decreasing his damage or range of the turret. Strategically Torbjorn is a good hero, but playing against five is not fun for anyone.

I think blizz should just make it that you can’t choose a hero someone else on your team is playing. ie: no more than 1 of a hero on a team. 2 in a match. It’ll encourage more diversity.

Then go cry in a corner. MOBA’s don’t allow 2 heroes in the same map at all. If someone takes it, tough, you make do. At least my proposal restricts that to just your team.

I never said Overwatch was a MOBA, but it borrows a lot of its traits. Seriously, nerfing a hero to the ground isn’t the answer. Being able to play 6 of the same character has long been one of my biggest gripes with this game.

All that lore, and you can have 12 Winstons beating each other up. Where did the cloning come into it?

          • BakedBagel

            June 22, 2016 at 17:46

Nerfing to the ground no. The recent changes where nerfs and those hero’s are still equally viable.

Who cares how you have 12 winstons. But you can have 12 if you want. Why take it away? To stop teams all playing one hero. Everything has a counter. That is a moba trait and a very important tool to balance. Its why most of the time a 1 hero strat doesnt do much, on PC anyway.

You can have reasons as to why a 1 hero strat is OP, but if you can play the game well and apply knowledge of hero counters, that strat doesnt work.

PS: the counter to Torbjorn is splash damage. Soldiers Right click absolutly reks that turret. Pharah normal attacks do alot of damage aswell

I don’t play the game, so can you explain why that easy counter is not used by console players?
Does the controller make it more difficult, or are they simply less intelligent?

            June 23, 2016 at 08:49

I think it comes down to the analog stick. It’s the same reasons why a controller will never be as good as a mouse and keyboard in fps titles. There is simply a lack of full control and speed with a analogue stick. Imo

Its the same thing. Why have PC players been able to counter it? it cant simply be the controller.

Seriously. Its the whole point of having different roles and hero’s one thing counters another. If Torbjorn is OP then nerf him.

You dont need to change a mechanic of a game because people cant counter it.

I can’t take you seriously. Your argument is a joke. You’ve never used a controller in your life, obviously, otherwise you’d completely understand the vast difference in how it works – and also one of the main reasons cross-play in a PvP FPS isn’t going to happen.

But yes, there’s no difference and PC players can counter it so “git gud console nubs lol nerf”

No problem, I’ll try explain this as best I can.

With a mouse, when you move your mouse in real life, the game responds accordingly. The faster and further you move your mouse, the faster and more you turn in game. There is no limit, besides how fast you move and how high/low your sensitivity is set.

On Controller, you’re not physically moving an object for the game to correspond with. Think of it like a joystick (because that’s essentially what it is, a thumb-sized joystick). You’re basically saying to the game “move left at speed x” – but speed X is a set value. You can’t go slower or faster than a specific range. What that means is that it will always take longer to turn 90 degrees on console than it will on PC, purely based on how the inputs work.

In real numbers. Mouse can move 5000 pixels in a fraction of a second, but a controller is limited to say 1000 per second. These values aren’t real values, but they demonstrate why the two inputs are so different in gameplay terms.

          • Kerrits

            June 23, 2016 at 08:52

So it’s purely about the big movements? I assume the turrets are placed on the ground, and mainly stationary, so how do players find themselves surrounded by them?

I can see that PC players will be able to snap shoot a lot faster, so they will get the same number of shots in a shorter amount of time. BUT, from the article it seems that Overwatch has aim assist, which should bring the two closer together?

          • Pariah

            June 23, 2016 at 08:57

Not quite, aim assist works within a very small area of your pointer/cursor – whereas without it you shoot “on the dot” as it were. The problem comes in with the slow movements to shift your view 90 degrees when you come around a corner, or when you’re changing targets. This takes longer on a controller.

Meanwhile, the turrets don’t have that constraint. They snap to you much faster than you can react. On PC, you can react to the turrets much faster, see where they are, and take cover and deal with them accordingly, all much faster than with a controller. It’s about reaction time, more than anything else.

Aim assist really doesn’t make a difference with regards to the turrets. It does however help when you’re pointing in the right direction and are a few pixels left of where you need to be. See again minimum and maximum speeds – making precision aiming more difficult / slow as well. 🙂

            June 23, 2016 at 08:58

While some guys have gotten SUPER accurate with their controllers, a mouse with out perform it EVERY time. You get pin point accuracy and varying speed with a mouse. You can go from a 180 degree turn in less than a second to pin point accurate in the remainder of that second. If you have 3 targets and equal distance apart, Torb’s turrets as an example. On pc is will take less than a second to aim between each one. Depending on your console sensitivity it can take anything between 1 to 2+ seconds to aim at the next one accurately. That means it takes longer overall to drop the target, therefore more time for the turret to shoot at you.

Why are you so damn angry. You are the one who compared the two so I am following suit. Grow up. You justification for disallowing double hero’s was the lore. Because console players can’t handle a 6 hero strat. Any hero with an above 60% win rate should be looked at to nerf. Not into the ground but tweaked.

You don’t have to come across as a fucking tool to understand this.

This is by the dumbest solution I’ve seen people come up with. What’s the point of that? Taking a step towards forcing people to play something useful rather than a clone pick? They’re gonna be a team player or not whether you limit their options or not. It has nothing to do with fairness or diversity. Blizzard already stated that they’ll be balancing pc and console with have balance patches unique to the platforms. That’s all that needs to be done. Don’t get butt hurt because a Primarily PC gaming company had pity on console peasants and gave them overwatch but balanced it for PC first and foremost. They’ll never limit hero clones because there’s no reason to piss off alot of players to appease the whining few who want this because they don’t have friends to play custom games with and don’t like how other people play the game.

Trouble is you’re already playing bots when you face 3 or 4 turrets. Except these bots have no difficulty setting, never miss, and have an absolutely absurd range. And if they’re set up to cover each other / spread out sufficiently, you use 2 or 3 people to get one down, only to get pressured by the other 2 or 3. By the time you’ve recovered the first is up and level 2 again. And then it’s MOOOOLTTEEEN COOOOOREE time.

Speaking of which, I walked up to a lone turret with Reinhardt (at full HP) with my shield up. Torbs was nowhere to be seen. Flamestrike and start swinging my hammer. Just about got it down (while taking damage) and then MOOOOLTEEEN COOORE. The turret autoheals up to it’s ultimate HP and kills me. Now in retrospect I should have just shielded up again and waited it out but I honestly didn’t expect it to be able to tank that much damage.

It should not be possible for a heroes PET to solo take down a TANK standing right next to it, especially when the hero himself actually has a decent health pool + amour and does pretty good amount of damage on his own without his turret.

And then of course there’s Volskaya / Hanamura with 3 or 4 Torbs and Symmetra, whose turrets are also a pain in the ass (although they’re super squishy so it’s kinda ok)

Edit: There are obviously counters but this is tough in a pickup group with no mics / text chat. You also shouldn’t need a full team coordinated push to make it through 3 or 4 player’s PETS.

Turrets are easier to handle on PC because you can flick and target them nearly instantly. It’s much, much, much harder to quickly target them on console.

In the same way Widow really isn’t an issue on console for the same reason but on PC she was an absolute monster pre-nerf.

i havent once seen 2 players simultaneously playing as torbjorn on the same team, and ive played a bit of this game. has anyone really come across a team full of these so often they actually feel the need to write an article about it..? once playing against AI we all played as tracer just for the lols, it didnt go well whatsoever, still fun though

Played against 4 Torbjorn and 2 Symmetra last night, I guess those guys read this article. 😛
We almost captured the first point. Widowmaker eats turrets for breakfast

Last night, we trolled as 6 Junkrats, and it totally decimated the other team, but we only did that once, since it got old, really fast

Personally, I think any 6x one hero is the problem, not Torbjorn specifically.

If the author is honest, 1 x Torbjorn is not overpowered, there are more powerful characters by comparison, but 4 – 6 of the same makes it nigh impossible on defense when played properly. Stacking the same characters is the needed debate, 6 x D’Vas on attack is equally impossible, even if they nerf Torbjorn, there will be others that will suddenly surface as “Overpowered” when stacked, so I feel the article has focused on the symptoms and not the cause.

Blizzard needs only to restrict the number of same characters per team, 3 max I feel would be correct to me.

    Thoughts?

Let’s focus less on the nerf, OP or too many of same hero and focus on the fun part?

Is it fun playing against the strat, no… team needs to pick same counters… so them playing like that means you have to play the same thing over and over to counter it… but then you get what will always happen.

People leave game, not because it cant be beaten, because they just don’t care… i get a loss… don’t care, i want a fun close game win or lose. Add people to avoid list… and it worked well with the avoid list, but after the recent patch, avoid list gone, because people were avoiding the good players to have easier games and win… Sigh…

Had soo many good games, very close, almost always won or lost on overtime… fun games after adding all the mass tjorborns and EZ comment players to the list. (yes you type EZ, i block you for douchebagness)

What the stats don’t say is that 95% of torbjorns kills are not from the player themselves. Heck I got an 8 player kill streak on a walk back from the spawn yesterday , in a high player level match and that was only the 3rd time I had ever played him. Try getting an 8 player killstreak with Genji without any practice no way.

All the computer controlled Turrets including sumetra lasers must be removed from the game or must be controlled by the player.

For all the idiots who say “git gud” or start realing off a list of counters. The main point is totally missed.

and that is that Turrets and lasers in Overwatch are computer controlled aim-bots. you haven’t died because the other player out played you or has better skill. And you didn’t get any turret kills in any honourable way. also all the time you have been fighting those Turrets you may as well be playing off line cos u been playing a computer. Heck my team won the other day against 4 of them but only because I hung back as Widowmaker and spent the match sniping them. Was that fun to spend the match shooting computer aim-bots so my team could have a half fun match?

and although you will see many play of the day from a turret it is a computer giving praise to itself that is why people rearly vote for them after match.

Turrets are no fun to play against , are no fun to win with. they are no fun to use,

you can allready see in higher level matches players mutually rejecting them. though It’s much harder for defence to win then without properly teaming up. It’s much more fun for everyone….

Get rid of the Turrets blizzard….
