Transformers Universe will close doors in January

Transformers-Universe

As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it the next big MOBA… or something like that. It seems like EVERY company thought it would be a good idea to hop onto that genre’s bandwagon, looking to compete with top dogs Dota 2 and League of Legends. It’s incredibly risky, and honestly, I don’t see it working out for many. EA’s offering, Dawngate, shut down just over a month ago for example, before it even saw any proper release. Those footsteps are being followed by another title – Transformers Universe

As much as I don’t like the idea of the MOBA market being flooded, it saddens me to see a project being unplugged (regardless of genre really). Transformers Universe kicked off its open beta way back in July. Sadly, it’ll never leave that state of existence (Joystiq via Transformers Announcment)

Today Jagex and Hasbro can confirm that Transformers Universe will close. This decision comes at an important time for both companies as they both realign their plans and focuses for 2015. We’re hugely disappointed, but the game will be closing over the coming weeks before its full closure at 10am GMT on 31st January 2015.

The shutdown period will begin from today. As part of the winding down we will be refunding all those that have purchased a Founders Pack, as well as anyone that has purchased relic bundles and starter packs. These refunds should be all processed in the next 30 days. In addition we will be closing the ability for new players to make accounts, those of you that already have accounts will continue to be able to use them until the closure date.

I never got to play the game. I applied for the beta and received nothing (as far as I know) so I have no clue if it was any good or not. Still, my heart goes out to the development team. I can only imagine what it must feel like to have poured work into something for nothing to come of it.

The MOBA market really is a tough cookie to crack. The only other title I see standing up to the other mammoths is Heroes of the Storm. That’s made by Blizzard though, who have the resources and diehard fan base to work with. Any other newcomers really have their work cut out for them.

[Ed Note: Yes, I know every single metaphor is mixed or broken, but I love it that way and refuse to fix it.]

Please if you guys would like to try to keep this game going sign the petition. There are many people who did not get to even try the game. If you want to continue playing it or want to play because you never got the chance let’s at least try and save it.
