Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft 2 releasing DRM free on GoG

Good Old Games and Blizzard seem to have really taken a liking to one another, what with their partnership to re-release some of the older titles from that company that have become a little bit harder to source and play legally. That being said, it was recently announced that Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft 2 will both be released on the GoG store DRM free, much like the original Diablo was around a month ago. Besides the DRM free business, both titles have received a bit of polish and have received updates to ensure that they’re more compatible with today’s hardware. Not bad considering the 25 year difference from the original release date of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans to this re-release. Warcraft 2 will also include both expansions of the game, Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal.

That being said, if you feel like a real trip down nostalgia lane you can choose to switch between the updated and classic versions of the game to really sink your teeth into the 1994 experience. One can only assume that all the buzz around these classic Blizzard titles being re-released on GoG must be as a means of ramping up to the release of Warcraft 3: Reforged. In any case, I’m glad Warcraft 1 and 2 are getting some love from Blizzard again, even if they are just re-releases with some updated specs for modern hardware. As successful and world-defining as both titles are, neither really received the praise and attention that was heaped upon Warcraft 3. Hopefully this will serve as a means of nostalgia for some or a chance to go back and investigate the roots of many a player’s favourite fantasy universe.
