World of StarCraft MOD thrown to the zerglings

And by “zerglings” I mean Blizzard’s legal guys, who in all likelihood are actual zerglings only they wear ties and have little businessmen suits tailored to fit their multiple limbs and slashy bits. Aww, they sound so cute; somebody turn that into a plushie.

Anyway! Tuesday’s ION had a link to a fan-made StarCraft II MOD which turned the RTS into a MMO-type World of StarCraft game. People loved it; Blizzard not so much. Queue the legal zerglings with an evolved +2 to Litigation Speed.

The modder, who goes by the name of Ryanwin, posted a video on Youtube showing off the MOD’s pre-alpha footage. Shortly afterwards his video was removed and replaced by a “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Activision Games INC” message. Ryanwin was then hit by a cease and desist email from Activision Blizzard.

Naturally, he’s a little miffed by Blizzard’s reaction and said, “You created a tool that allowed us to do anything with your assets. You encouraged us to use your assets and were eager to see what we might come up with. You had to have seen this coming?”

The pre-alpha video is still available to view here if you want to check it out. It’s impressive stuff, but it ends with a “Coming Soon” message, which will probably have to be changed now.

I'm a freelance writer who has somehow managed to convince people to pay me to play video games. By day I work a job, but by night and early hours of the morning, I write about video games. The one job provides a living for my family; the other provides a living for my soul. Dramatic, right?
