X rebirth screen 037

The newest iteration in the X franchise is vying to become the new biggest thing ala Eve Online. X Rebirth has launched on Steam and features a fully simulated space economy, as well as fleet warfare.

X Rebirth is striving to be the most realistic and persistent space simulator, allowing you to build your own economic and military empire, battle others for supremacy, or do whatever you like in this space sandbox. Every ship will have a purpose – as the description explains:

Every ship you see has a task. Stop a freighter from reaching its destination and its cargo will be stopped too, causing prices to rise.

I don’t know if I’d want to get into the whole space battle thing, but I really like the idea of building.

Create your own empire! From trading stations to large factories, farms to hightech military complexes, everything can belong to you. Build for trade and profit or to strengthen your military presence and dominate your enemies.

With their release came a launch trailer. I’ve got to say, the game looks really beautiful. All in-game footage, it’s pretty impressive. For those who love their space sandboxes and are looking for something new and awesome, I have a feeling this will be the game. It does cost a pretty penny, though, selling on Steam for Windows only at $50. But just check out this trailer:

      Star Citizen as well.

Looks like people are going for the niche market Eve Online created. Going to be an interesting time for the space sim MMO scene.

Absolutely, I played Eve a bit, but just can’t stay committed to it, it’s highly advanced and very very time consuming.

I imagine Star Citizen is quite the same.

I think the X Series started before EVE Online, actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_(game_series)

X: Beyond The Frontier released in 1999.

Regardless, I really hope the near-future is bright for Space Sims. There needs to be more of ’em. Space games in general, really.

The X series actually copied Privateer, Eve online also copied privateer to some extent. But the X series space flight sims started years before Eve Online.

Funny thing is, based on the internal code, this game looks like it was designed for the Xbox360 but during the development something happened and it wasn’t pushed out. Several years later they announced it was coming out for the PC and what we got was a Xbox 360 to PC port.

      Evidence:
7 years development time (more like developed then stopped then tweaked and deployed)
Xbox 360 markers all over the code
Broken joystick controls and broken keyboard shortcuts
Incredibly easy enemy AI (to accommodate using a controller interface)
DX 9 engine (same as Xbox 360)
More optimized on older hardware (with around the same specs as the Xbox 360, newer hardware is having severe performance issues)

Well, I am a console gamer, primarily, and I do not like forking out so much for a game and do not, as a rule. I buy a year after release, for example.

But sometimes I do buy when I should not!

The only thing thats similar to Eve is that it both takes place in space. You cannot fly your ship from a cockpit in eve online. You view your ship from the outside and double click in space where you need to go.

Eve is more a strategy game than a space flight sim.

As a major fan of this genre, I was very excited for this, but there are a number of issues with the release, take a look here: http://www.incgamers.com/2013/11/egosoft-apologise-for-the-state-of-x-rebirth

I would suggest hanging on a bit for the inevitable wave of patches before shelling out.

I do not know If I have the patience for another X-game. Wow, it can take a lot of effort to get something good going.

Been watching this for a while now, but not really sure I should go there. It is not likce Civ V, where I can start a game, play a bit (3.4 hours), get bored and quit.

If this is not a multiplayer game (http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=310210)
Then it is nothing like Eve Online.

So please for the Love of all things gaming Stop that comparison.
Or should i start comparing X-series to “Masters of Orion” ??

Don’t buy this game. It sucks. Rather get the old X:3 Reunion instead.

It’s full of bugs, the UI is awful. Managing fleets is a pain. Trading is a nightmare. Combat is monotonous. The graphics look like something from the 90’s.

Give this a pass until they fix the game.

Got it on Friday. Big fan of the X-series. It is full of bugs and little issues. A decent patch should sort it out, but for now maybe hang back and wait till they clear the issues. Still, its going to be a great game once it gets going.

Agree, Egosoft at least does decent patching and support for its games. And hopefully they manage to fix all the bugs. I am sure this will probably be the best selling X game yet, and I hope it funds future X games.

But they really need to rethink their technology and UI/Art direction. Perhaps it will be best to abandon the engine and use UE, CryEngine or something else to push out more polys, better texture mapping etc. This imo will free up time/resources to push into actual content and system creation which is the main draw for X anyway.

Be careful of this game. There are loads of bugs and extremely poor quality controls etc.

Go to metacritic and read some of the user reviews. I look at some very good constructive reviews and it does not look very good.

People are saying they have wasted their money on this.
