Why the Xbox One is getting better

The Xbox One is looking like a bit of a slow burner. It really didn’t have the greatest start. After its reveal by Don “The Jacket” Mattrick, the company was forced by near consumer revolt to abandon many of its planned features. For a long while after, it’d been much maligned; the little black sheep of the new consoles. But things are slowly, slowly changing, and the console’s been a little more respected. Speaking on the Xbox-focused podcast The Inner Circle, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg related why.

Don

Mostly, it’s all down to Phil Spencer. Since he’s taken over, he’s helped the entire brand seem like more of a gamer-focused one than one concerned primarily with profit.

“Phil has been the head of our games for many years, and to have him in charge of the entire business is the reflection of that. He’s been a great leader, people love working with him, and the guy knows games inside out. You can see that in the review. Phil can see stuff that nobody sees. He has that talent. He’s fantastic and he genuinely cares. He’s a total class act,” Greenberg says of his boss.

Phil

The company’s adopted a new approach to its games business now, building up games and franchises, investing in the future of the Xbox brand and its exclusives. It’s a nice change, I suppose, from the over-reliance on Gears of War, Halo and Forza.

“The slow and steady approach is our focus and we’re very clear on what we wanna do. We’re not wavering and we’re making investments and building the best games anywhere, and building the best platform for gamers.

I think we’ll continue to innovate and we’ll continue to bring great games. We did it last year, and we’ll do it again next year. We feel like that’s the right strategy. As long as we stay focused on that, I think we’ll be all right.”

As for the future of the Xbox? It’s only going to get better, says Greenberg.

“I’m excited. I’ve seen a little bit of the future, and I’ve seen some of the farther future stuff, which is pretty awesome too. I think all up the company is doing some really cool things. I thought the Windows 10 event was great. Hololens is multiple years in the future technology that they’re delivering today, which is just unbelievable.”

We’ll soon see how bright that future is, when the company shows off DirectX 12 and its impact on the Xbox One at GDC next month.

I’m in the preview program and while screenshots are indeed finally arrivingx it’s limited in its functionality. You can only take images in game. So if you want to screenshot your home/background to show to friends you can’t.

      Nope. Far from it.

DLNA streaming, uncompressed screenshot sharing with PNG, a universal app platform with Win 10, incredible sales for digital downloads, further OTA free T.V. support along with Sling TV (making it a cord-cutters dream box), and a lot more stuff that has been included in the box since day one that many are taking for granted.

Problem with Xbox One, it is a media centre first, then a gaming console. That is why it feels sluggish all the time. The interface is a pain in the neck. I honestly have reached the point where I will rather watch tv than switch on the X1 and have to struggle through the interface.

The same problem existed on the PS3, where it use to be a pain to switch it on, but I feel the PS3 is still a better media centre than the X1.

The X1 is not competing with the PS4, but it is competing with the PS3. The same way the PS4 is not competing with the X1, but with the Xbox 360. In the end, both new gen consoles win the power battle. And will come out top.

As for which system I will buy a game on, I will pay premium not to use the X1’s interface.

“Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On”, “Xbox On” (Make sure you can hear a pin drop in the house) “Xbox On” and finally it switches on

“Xbox Select Halo” Movie player comes up

Play Kinect Sports Rivals, spend 90% of the time trying to get kinect to recognise me.

Install a game, get notice it is ready to play. Open game, get told you need to wait for install to finish.

Want to select a game to play, have to go through 3 menu’s

Take a screenshot (Oh Wow, I have to double tap this, then select that, then press here.)

Xbox, Capture that 15 seconds of gameplay and ignore the 10 minutes before. Or I can snap this to the side, to this and that and only then can I record more than 15seconds of video, but now I am playing at a reduced screen size.

Want to play a single player game when Xbox Live is down (Halo, unable to play as it noticed an update for the game, single player unavailable, please sing into xbox live)

The list can go on and on tbh. Using the X1 is a chore. Will never connect my normal TV programs to it

You must be a complete moron or not have an Xbox One…I suspect both. Well, lets go through your list.
Xbox On could use an improvement, but for me, it typically works by the second time as they have made improvements to it. Still, it could be better, so you score a point from the start. Good job.
“Xbox Select Halo” Ummm…yeah, Xbox is probably confused there considering it’s the wrong command. How about, “Xbox, go to Halo Master Chief Collection”? Oh my, it went to Halo on the first try. It’s amazing how well things work when you know what you’re doing. In fact, you can use “Xbox Select” to get the exact commands of each game and application. Those pretty words that turn green…well, those are what the Kinect is looking for.
I have Kinect Sports Rivals…my Kinect works flawlessly with it. Maybe try calibrating the Kinect for voice and camera. I did…and it works great. I can even post a video of how exactly wrong you are on this.
Want to select a game…you can use Kinect (no menus and now you know the command)…or you can go through only 2 menus. Hit the home home button and go to My Games and Apps. You can also pin your favorite gamers…then you can go home and press the left bumper once. AMAZING! You have three methods to get the game you want. If you have a disk in the system, then that game is always the tile on the bottom right…that means it is always on the main home screen. Oh my!
Wow, again…adding a third step to something that is only two. Now, you can say, “Xbox, take a screenshot” which I know is tough for you since memorizing these commands is a challenge. However, it’s only a double tap of the home button and then pressing “Y”. There is no “selecting of that” in need…only two steps.
“Xbox Record That” or double tap and press x records 30 seconds, not fifteen. Also, using game DVR, it is always recording 5 minutes of gameplay. You do not need to have the application snapped while playing. Simply SNAP game DVR (if you use it often, it will be a most recent SNAP to launch which sheds time off) and simply hit end recording. Looky, you captured your last 5 minutes of gameplay without needing to have SNAP up. Yeah, you might have 15 seconds idle for then you SNAP, but at least you didn’t have to have it up the whole time.
That is developers choice of what they allow to played while the game is still installing. PS4 has the same issue on many games (like NBA2K only lets you play the demo mode where you get only two teams). This is on both consoles, so you’re just grasping at straws here.
The list can’t go on because your list is nothing but a fallacy. As someone who has owned the system since release, it is very clear to me that you’re just too stupid for Xbox One.

stop making sense. that is not allowed here. And I find it best when I say the word “Xbox” then pause for about a half second then finish the rest of my command. It also helps you if you’re looking at the Kinect because it is looking for you and is also trying to read your lips, which his kinect is apparently not calibrated as he can’t get sports rivals to work either.

          1. “Xbox on” “Xbox on” “make sure you can hear a pin drop in the house” – you know you can calibrate the mic right? ????

          2. “Xbox Select Halo” Movie player comes up” – Well there’s your problem right there, try “Xbox, go to Halo” ????

          3. “spend 90% of the time trying to get kinect to recognise me” – again, CALIBRATE, it’s quick and once off(take off your fake moustache)

          4. Patience is a virtue (use that time to calibrate something…????)

          5. “Want to select a game to play, have to go through 3 menu’s” – again, use “go to” or pin to start! ????

          6. “I have to double tap this, then select that, then press here” – again….”Xbox, take a screenshot”

Here’s a small tip I found out that I didn’t know existed that makes navigating a tad easier. If you go to your friends list, you can press the menu button on any friend (without opening their profile) and choose to invite to party or send messages. This did not use to be a part of navigation as you always had to open the profile and select from there.

Now, don’t be too hard on the guy…Gamespot reviewers couldn’t figure out how to get to the settings menu even though you can press the menu button from anywhere in the UI and select settings from there. That was an embarrassing read.

X1 is just not on par with the PS4, and it will never be, they have been outsold, outclassed and beaten in everyway, with exception to the Kinect, but nobody cares for that anyway, X1 is the size of a video machine and its basically a video machine for 2015.

I think its a cool VM if you like all the extra media related crap and dont have a PC or Laptop, but for gaming its not even in the same dimension as PS4

“for gaming its not even in the same dimension as PS4”
based on what? What is the PS4 doing for gaming that puts it in another dimension? I mean, you literally need to squint to see the differences between the two consoles graphically. It must be those high quality titles that is changing the industry like Knack, Killzone, Driveclub, and The Order that is doing it…and that is one dimension I’d never want Xbox One to follow.

Futureman, what is the PS4 doing for gaming that puts it in another dimension?

We’ll patiently wait for your answer.

One thing PS4 did was basically do exactly the opposite of what MS did during the reveal at E3 and that led to the 180 movement from MS. 24 hour check in, their game sharing policies and the need for Kinect to always be connected disappeared. Price cuts for the XBOX followed as well and now sales are on the up for the XBOX. Soon Halo 5 and Gears of War will land and sales will increase even further. All because the internet took a stance at the draconian system MS wanted to implement.

            February 23, 2015 at 20:41

Lol…look at the internet drivel. I even like how you used the word “draconian” just because the internet did. Try to use that noggin of yours instead of being a follower and think a bit on the reasoning why Microsoft was taking the route they were taking. I know, they are the big bad greedy company wanting to squeeze every dollar from the consumer. I’m sure that is what you’re thinking.

First, that doesn’t answer my question. If it does, then you surely can’t be happy it. Sony was going down a similar path of “DRM” policies, of which, they reversed before the E3 reveal. Why were publishers and developers happy about this? Well, lets turn our heads to the PC market. What Microsoft proposed is Steam policies on a console. Why was something like this proposed and why would it actually help the industry instead of destroy it? The PC market before Steam was dying. That is because publishers and self publishers/developers, were not seeing proper return on the platform. People would find ways to download and pirate on PC, so Steam was born to curb that issue. Now, you literally have to purchase the game through Steam. However, why do game prices go down so quickly on Steam? They go down because…after the initial selling months, publishers can still bank on their games by lowering prices and still make a return through the sale. Even if a game is 3 years old, publishers receive every penny of their game sold, so they are always making money off the product.

Okay, here’s what Sony did. Due to Sony’s bold move to pre-reverse before E3, it keeps your game prices high, DLC being the “out of control) offer for money squeezing techniques, and limits risks in the industry. As long as people can trade games, publishers will no longer see a return for every product sold as they see a big fat 0 for every game sold as used.

Maybe you don’t know this, but games are extremely expensive to make. A publisher generally needs to fund millions of dollars for a project that won’t be completed until several years and simply hope that the product sells. Maybe you missed the tons of studio closures that have happened in the last several years as well. If you were investing that kind of money, wouldn’t you want to make sure that you were getting as full of a return as you could when selling your product?

You probably won’t read all of this, but thank you for informing me that you love DLC and all of these other tactics that publishers are using to avoid trade ins. You can praise Sony for that. Otherwise, they did nothing but actually hurt gaming, not help it.

Games cost $60 a few years back and they still do. Games are more expensive on console because they need to pay Sony And Ms a licensing fee. Hence why we have DLC and season passes. I don’t love DLC but sometimes it’s worth getting, like most DLC for Borderlands. Also if they banned trade ins I wouldn’t be able to buy that many games day one anymore. Then I’d sit on the side like the PC folk and wait for the Steam sale, or the PSN equivalent which happened quite recently.

The reversal was mostly a moot point anyways as all of the big publishers are instituting DRM through the need of an always online connection through their portals which was easily felt when lizard squad took down the login for both sony and microsoft on Christmas.

I really want the Xbox to succeed.. Really I do, but I cant see myself buying one anytime soon… It has nothing that makes me go… “WOW!”. Even as PS4 owner I just go “meh..” most of the time these days everything is so over hyped. Then just under delivers.

It’s the start of a new console generation. Great games take time. The PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PS3, all suffered growing pains in its first year. Go back and play COD 2, NBA2K6, Condemned, Kameo, and Full Auto. Compare the quality of those games to what PS3 and Xbox 360 have today. Patience is virtue.

Well, a good way to start is to wait a little while. The Lazygamer crew has once or twice arranged a meet-up somewhere, typically before or after one of the comic or games conventions. That seems to me to be the best bet, to meet people with the same interests and so forth.

It’s an underpowered box designed less with playing games in mind than watching TV. They’ve “turned things around” by dropping the vision for the system (no Kinect), dropping the price $150, giving away 2 games, and often giving a gift card or free Live subscription. And for their efforts they still lost the holiday season worldwide to Sony, and barely outsold the PS4 in the US. Getting better? It can’t get worse.
