Call of Duty fans – particularly those who play online – are often portrayed as being immature, whiny and acerbic jerkoffs with little regard for other people. They – or at least one particularly caustic sub-section – has now proved that true.
Treyarch, the chaps behind last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 published a list of gun balancing notes for the PC version of the game this week, and it’s caused “fans” to lose their collective shit; so much sop that they’ve begun levying violent threats at the game’s design director, David Vonderhaar
“End your fucking life you cancer cunt i will fuck your daughter,” said one particularly delightful wordsmith over Twitter “I hope u die,” wrote another, while another “Haha screw @DavidVonderhaar fuk*n up the DSR and Ballista cant fuk*n hit quad feeds now #KillYourself Vonderhaar!!! SERIOUSLY!!”
That is but a small, charming sample.
Activision’s Dan Amrich has blogged on the matter, calling for gamers to stop being such giant dicks to game developers, and wondering why people are so surprised that balancing tweaks are being made.
“This has happened with every Call of Duty game that’s come out for the last few years, and it will continue to happen — a gun’s stats being adjusted should not be a surprise to anybody at this point.
“Yet Vahn [Vonderhaar] often gets told he should die in a fire or kill himself or is a horrible person. If anybody thinks for a second that this is okay, it is not. But if the loudest voices in the Call of Duty “community” act like an angry mob instead, guess how the entire world views Call of Duty?
He also summed up why it is that videogames are still not being taken as seriously as they should – and it’s the old ‘empty vessels” argument.
“Now consider that these Internet Tough Guy rants and demands are not unique to COD, but exist everywhere, in many gaming communities. This is why the world often does not take gaming seriously; this is why gamers are assumed to be immature, whiny assholes. Because the immature, whiny assholes are louder.”
“If you enjoy your games,” Amrich pleads, “have a little respect for the people who make them — and stop threatening them with bodily harm every time they do their job.”
For his part, David Vondehaar has remained polite and helpful
Honestly, threatening a dude with physical violence because some guns fire a little less rapidly in a goddamned videogame is beyond ridiculous. For interest’s sake, here are the patch notes. If they fill with enough anger to threaten physical violence, I’m going to have to ask that you click the “x” at the top right and go somewhere else – because you sure as hell don’t belong here.

It happens in many games. The rage when a new balance patch comes out. Not sure about the wish of death. But people gets seriously pissed off. you always hear. “Now the game is ruined” “It’s over” “They F’ed up”.

As much as I dislike little kiddies like these, we can’t blame everything on them stupid ass mofo kiddies, truth be told, developers wanted to make games for kiddies, this is the result of that. Almost every developer nowadays make games for kiddies like these, instead of the pro gamers out there, and sorry but CoD doesn’t fall under the pro game category and this proves that point.
The guys who do actually have legit skills are being thrown aside for these little wankers, and then developers flip when the kiddies start crying. I don’t pick any of the two sides, both are equally bad!

I don’t play Black Ops2 that much but it seems that every time I play, I get someone swearing at me. Now I’ve been sworn at since MW2 and it’s mostly from people who think that they are good at the game and that they should win all the time.
It’s all my K/d. With MW2 I noticed that people like really cared, felt proud of, bragged, about their k/d. I used MW2 to learn what i can do and what i can’t do with different maps and game modes, which meant that i lost and died a lot, which was fun for me.
Now with Black Ops2 they have a score per minute system. So that mean that you will have to play well, win and win really fast. So there is more emphasis on the stats of the game instead of just playing the game. And when you just play the game, you will have more fun in the game and new players can learn faster in the game. So with Call of Duty you have this cockiness (Rambo with a smg running around never dieing) and with new players wanting to shut up the cocky assholes but by the time they get there, they in this mindless mental cocky battle (1v1 bro), instead of just playing the game to have fun. Stats are never fun.
On topic. I played Black ops 1 where they fucked up the sniper. Now I don’t like quickscoping, I like to see what I’m shooting at and when the cross hair was on the target and nothing happened when I fired, that’s a problem.
So there might be some real issues with the update on the pc. Did some people complain in an immature, rude, crude, way. yes but to me that just shows the severity of the issue.
Did you really think a game series that breeds the false sense of being the best (k/d, spm, killstreaks, scorestreaks, Usa winning, ect) and when the people making the games are not the best anymore, not a surprise to me, to see how people actually responded to them. You can not create a false sense of being the best and expect to be better than them and that’s how Call of Duty fans responded to developers.
Ps. I do not know how many times I had to tell someone on Call of Duty that it is only a game. A game is all that Call of duty can be. Can Call of Duty be anything other than a old piece of shit game, no. Mojo Jojo

I used to play. I was particularly useless. But I used to enjoy myself most of the time. One day I decided to try a sniper rifle. I’d never used one in the multiplayer game before; despite being a relatively high rank.
This is a challenge for me because I suffer from relatively shaky hands – due I believe to the massive quantities of coca-cola and coffee I used to consume. This makes keeping the cross hairs steady a bit difficult.
I come around a corner, see an enemy, aim, and miss. Multiple times. Naturally, my ineptitude alerts my enemy and he rushes at me while I reload; re-aim and this time, manage to steady myself long enough to kill him.
I have never read such abuse before. I was threatened with gory death; my parentage questioned; my manhood questioned, threatened and vilified.
So threatening to end the life of a developer over rebalancing a weapon I can well believe. It’s quite sad really …

the dev allaws chating boosting and racist threats, they got what they deserved. they are abad dev and they dont even have a real complaint section, the report player options are fake or just ignored. thats why i switched to battlefeild. better graphics better developers, and no lag switcher’s or kids allowed. battlefeild 4 has already banned over 72 kidsand many more cheaters. cod ghost is allowing lag switches and has left coding for jailbreak cheating support online. they tend to hide that from public knowledge however. also cod ghost developers said destructible envirements but all i see is one or two small things you can slightly damage in maps. battlefield has it to where you can destroy everything on the map that campers can hide behind, killing the campers without risk. cod series is known as call of daycare anyway. nothing but 8 year olds on ghost and black ops1 and 2 90 percent of the time and they all use lag switchs. the developer even allows them to cheat.and dosent give a crap about us real gamers anymore since they got too ig with th cheating community.
