The MSSA sent out a press release yesterday announcing that the South African League of Legends national team will be taking part in a tri-nations tournament against Israel and Denmark in the near future.

The exact wording is as follows,

For this reason the MSSA, with a great deal of help from both MWEB and the IeSF have structured the first ever on-line Tri-Nations Test Match.

The South African Protea Team will be pitted against both Denmark and Israel in this exciting test match.

The Danes are without doubt the favourites, but the South African Team is determined to hold their own.

Even though the Tri-Nation Test Match will be played on-line, the South African team will play as a unit from the MWEB MCAVE at the MWEB head office in Parow.

So instead of just posting this and waving flags let’s look at some of the details.

First up the MSSA has structured the first ever online tri nations test match…Well done except the Danish are already playing on online Tri-Nations against Spain and France, so that’s the first lie.

Next up, it’s that test match thing again. Neither the Israeli nor Danish federations are actually federations or linked to the government. Now thankfully they both appear to be far more active and professional than the Mexican organisation and by all accounts it looks like these two will be able to provide the very best their nations have to offer… yet they aren’t official and therefore according to the laws and regulations of SASCOC, the governing body that Mind Sports falls under, it’s not really a test match.

It’s not complicated really, according to SASCOC it is not a test match.

test match”-means a contest in sport between national teams of two or more nations, held in terms of the rules and regulations of the international controlling body of such sport.

As there is no officially recognised international controlling body the match cannot be played under the rules and regulations of it. And as the Danish and Israeli bodies are not official they can’t award official colours and as such they are not an official national team.

Okay. But why are we being so pedantic about this, isn’t it all just good for the country and eSports in general?

Well yes and no. Playing against some of the top countries is definitely good for us and is something we all want. However why not just be honest about it? What is the MSSA trying to hide by pretending these are official test matches or that they are breaking new ground here?

It doesn’t make any sense and it’s very frustrating to see an organisation lie blatantly and then have journalists in our very own country sit here and defend them.

I don’t like calling out other journalists who are just doing their job but Han Cilliers wrote this yesterday

Yes, it’s a test match. How do we know this? Israel, Denmark and South Africa are all members of the International eSports Federation (IeSF), and you can only compete at the IeSF if you represent your country.

You can only compete at the IeSF if you represent your country, not if your country recognises you. That’s a big difference.

But don’t just take my word for it. Here is what the Israeli federation has to say about this match.

Israel’s national team will face world championship team in friendly matches against Denmark and selected South – Africa. Games will be broadcast live.

That horrible mess is the Google Translate version but I’ve had it verified by two separate Hebrew speaking people and the key point is what I have bolded above. These are being seen as friendlies by the Israeli team.

So our organisation is playing an official test match against Israel.. Israel are playing a friendly against us. It makes a mockery of the MSSA it really does and the only thing worse is the fact that when I asked Colin for confirmation I get this response.

dear Gavin
You seem to be unaware as to how sport works.
National federations are not government departments.
For example, Athletics South Africa is a private body that runs Athletics in South Africa.
SARU is a private association that runs rugby in South Africa.
SAFA is a private body that runs football in South Africa.
Need I go on?
Best regards

Yes Colin I do need you to go on, I need you to actually answer the question that was put forward. As an aside, Yes, SARU is a private organisation – but it’s one that’s affiliated with the internationally recognised International Rugby Board, which in turn is affiliated with the International Olympic committee, in turn affiliated with Sport Accord, the umbrella union of sports federations, of which FIFA, for example, is a member. that makes the IRB an officially, internationally accepted governing body. No such body exists for eSports. Interestingly, the IeSF has met the requirements and made an application to affiliate with Sport Accord, so that could well change in the future. If accepted, that would legitimise eSports and make all of this nonsense go away (though it could lead to even more bureaucratic meddling).

Hi Colin,

You are calling this a test match, are the Danish and Israeli teams chosen by their national departments or private organisations.

I look forward to your prompt response

Now yes my wording may be slightly off but we all know what the question is.

Interestingly my follow up email requesting contact details for the Israeli and Danish federations has been ignored, as has my query following up our request for information. I also contacted the IeSF previously and once I confirmed I am looking for information to investigate their matches they have also stopped responding.

Is he gone yet?

So all in all this test match is nothing more than a friendly game organised between different countries. That’s fantastic and something worth supporting –  so stop lying about it. You are just embarrassing yourself.

Oh and whoever is going to be taking over from Colin, I know you are reading this, please for the love of all that is holy don’t repeat the same mistakes. Be open, honest and transparent and the community and media at large will back you. You will get more sponsorships and backing and better press coverage. It really is that simple.

Oh and while the Israeli and Danish teams are playing online from their locations the MSSA is insisting that the South African team be on site at the Mweb Cave in Cape Town. My only response to that?

It's an online game... You can play it from anywhere

One would assume the organisation would have tried to up its game as it were after the last debacle. Dont get me wrong, I love the fact that our guys this side can compete internationally, but under the guise of some ground breaking ploy seems tasteless.

The lack of response is also somewhat disturbing, even though it could be considered abrasive wouldnt you as the governing member want to clear the foul stigma? I have no time for the ramblings further on regarding the MSSA as its just a headache for nothing, but that a part, surely you would want the press on your side? Hell, the gamers on your side??

There is a fundamental lack of recognition and organisation in these “national” esport tournaments, why not just drop the “government” portion and continue with the privatised matches. Itll all just save us a lot of time and effort.

On the Mweb Cave thing, it might not be a bad idea. Mweb has a pretty good infrastructure so, logically thinking, perhaps playing the match there will eliminante most of the bandwidth/lag issues that may pop up. ADSL in RSA is pathetic and when we look at connecting to international servers it just gets worse. My guess is that Mweb will piggy-back off their international connections and provide super-fast internet to the team. Just my two cents.

Agreed but I see two options:
        1. They fly the team down for the day or,
        2. They pick a team from the area (trololololol)
On a serious note, I cannot begin to imagine how a national agency works (or doesn’t). One would think that they would go with option 1 or find a viable alternative.

Part of the requirements from the teams being chosen, was that all the players had to be in the same province.
So all the national players are always either JHB or CPT based.

Or atleast thats sorta how it was last time i checked

Oh boy here we go again *Takes out popcorn*

But on a serious note I would have no issue with them stating it’s a tri-nations official match if the other 2 countries also did. BUT, at least one of them is viewing it as a friendly. This means that organisation and communication is up to sh*t. This is very embarrising.

My question to the MSSA is this:

If we are calling this an official international and the other countries are viewing it as a friendly, then won’t we become the laughing stock of those countries and bring embarrassment to the South African eSport scene?

If Gavin is wrong here with the translation, and I actually hope he is (no offense Gav, but I’d much rather you be wrong about the translation than right and we look like idiots as a whole in the SA eSports scene) then great and I will gladly say I’m sorry for jumping on the hype. But come on MSSA, get your facts straight at the very least!

I hope someone from the MSSA actually reads this as I’m not about to write them a mail.

That would be like the game between the Springboks and the All Blacks tomorrow if we believed it was an international and the All Blacks believed it to be a friendly.

Someone is going to walk away red faced and embarrassed. No different here. If the MSSA want to get our eSports international then they need to up their game in communication between other countries and make a more concerted effort to get the facts straight

That’s the point really. Call it what it is.

            Call a friendly a friendly.

Call a test match a test match.

But they are most certainly not interchangeable. Not if you want to be professional which I really do believe the MSSA wants to be. I honestly believe they have the best interest of eSports in SA at heart, but they need to start by being more “professional” and remember that dealing with international associations mean they need to be very careful and 100% sure of what they are posting.

            October 4, 2013 at 13:20

The issue Gavin is having with it is exactly that.

The MSSA have been interchanging “Friendly” and “Test Match/Official” for years. They make such a big deal about everything they do being “official” or “legit”, but when they get disproved “its just a word”

            October 4, 2013 at 13:24

Exactly! (wait, we are agreeing right? 😛 ) But yeah I think the whole thing went to the MSSA’s head and they lost the plot and tried to slap “official” on everything. This story is waaaaay past its expiry date.

What I enjoy about this site is being able to read about new games & consoles, see reviews and random interesting gamer-related info. This just seems to have moved from real reporting with any value to a bit of personal nit-picking in my opinion.

E-sports is still growing and you cannot expect every country to have an official federation because there is simply not enough interest. Maybe we should look at the value of the series as opposed to the precise definition of a “test” or who was first to have a tri-nations series. We are fortunate that people are actually taking an interest in e-sports in this country!!!

It’s not about other countries having official federations.. it’s about not lying to the gaming public. It’s not acceptable.

Perhaps you should report this to the Advertising Authority (http://www.asasa.org.za/) if it is such a misrepresentation. They deal with these issues daily.

Why waste your time reporting on this when you can occupy yourself with looking into something interesting? Then when they rule on it we can all move on with our lives and enjoy good stories about interesting gamer-related news!

Gavin, just try and see my comment for what it is. There is no need to analyse the facts in my comments because, I will be the first to admit I don’t actually care about this at all – neither do I profess to be an expert on classifying tests or ruling on misinformation.

I am merely giving what i see as constructive criticism. I like this site. I enjoy the articles. BUT this particular issue just seems to get too much attention when there are more interesting things I would rather read about. Use it or not – I don’t have to read these articles and you don’t have to write anything interesting if we choose not to.

So unless Gavin shows that those teams are not affiliated with the IeSF he is wrong. He is also wrong on what a friendly or what a test match is. He owes you an apology. His remarks in article and his reply ‘feel free to do as you please’ reeks of condensation as if you need his permission to speak your mind. Ha.

I am no fan of the MSSA, but this is bs. And I am also going to say this as a long time fan of Lazygamer: Lately Gavin’s articles have been reactionary and baiting and his reviews particularly poor. Common you can do better!

Inspector Detective Lazy‘s tool kit suggests that you might actually be the infamous man in question. I mean I get it, you have to defend yourself, but wouldn’t it be better to do so in an official capacity. That way, you can clear up any misconceptions, rather than let things fester under perceived or actual misinformation.

          Just a thought….

        Dear Mr Mannion

This is not the first time that you have printed a malicious article about the MSSA on your blob!

Please note that the MSSA reserves its rights.

I too need the following from you:

The type of legal entity under which LazyGamer is operating,

The address for service of notice, and

The contact details for your legal counsel.

I suggest that you get proper legal advice.

I look forward to your prompt response.

I’m bored with the MSSA bashing.

I’ve just accepted that MSSA is a wannabe organisation with an over-inflated view of themselves and some seriously horrid communication skills all run by someone that is showering his organization in controversy and shame .

That been said do I feel LG has expended too much time on exposing such controversy, especially when the scope of said controversy is relatively mediocre, are we nit-picking sermantics and the meaning of words in press releases now?

Either way MSSA articles hold no further interest for me, I have MSSA-fatigue.

Indeed it is. But you are trying to say that these are friendly matches. A friendly is a test match with nothing on the line. This is a tournament, so there is something on the line and should be called a test match.

Israel’s national team will face world championship team in friendly matches against Denmark and selected South – Africa. Games will be broadcast live

Let me change the emphasis: “Israel’s national team will face world championship team in friendly matches against Denmark and selected South – Africa. Games will be broadcast live

So even if it is just a friendly(which it is not(a match between sports teams and especially international teams that has no connection with league or championship play)) it will still be a test match.

If all teams are affiliated with IeSF. Then I fail to see what the issue is here?

It’s a shame really that he’s being painted in such bad light (2013).
He’s proven to me that he cares at least enough about our Gaming Community to have no interest other than to build and improve on it.
He has provided incredible support to unknown gaming organizers. The good side of Colin just never gets to go online – because it doesn’t make great news.

That is a good point. I do suppose that he would never have been given the position if he DIDN’T have the passion for it. And bad news is big news unfortunately.
I dont know Colin at all. The only thing I have to go is his interactions with the online community. And while there have been those that have been great, there have been quite a few that have been…well…..quite arrogant. Threatening to sue every time somebody does not agree with you is not a very endearing trait.
Someone in his position needs to have a certain amount of professionalism to be cool under fire and respond REASONABLY.
