I know everyone is playing Apex Legends/Call of Duty Warzone/Fortnite right now, but there’s still a ton of love out there for the game that put battle royales on the map, PUBG! With everyone stuck at home, PUBG Mobile Africa is looking to foster a little of the ol’ community spirit during the national lockdown with a new challenge that kicked off on March 30 and runs until April 15.

Developer Ndemic Creations may not have intended to create one of the most controversial games of all time years in advance (Plague Inc. is currently banned in China, along with Winnie the Pooh references), but the studio is striking while the iron is hot as they’ll be introducing a new mode to the game that is designed to reverse the goals of the original virus-spreading contagion simulation.

Gee, I wonder why?

What appears to be a return to the original formula, PvZ 3 has only been launched in a select few countries with more expected to follow in the next few weeks.

Of course people are buying it and unleashing their own Coronavirus pandemic, while also using the results for their studies of how a virus could spread beyond borders. Ndemic Creations may be chuffed with the sales, but they’re also warning people that it shouldn’t be taken as the gospel for learning about unstoppable diseases.

The stigma around mobile games won’t be dispelled with just that handful of examples though, a point made abundantly clear back when BlizzCon 2018 kicked off with the announcement of Diablo Immortal and saw the harshest of fan backlash thrown right back at the legendary developer. It’s a moment of infamy, and one that rival company Riot Games were terrified of repeating when they announced their own slate of games last year that just so happened to include a mobile project of their own.

Well here’s some absolutely shocking news: Free to play games are still doing gangbusters numbers on the digital frontier, raking in absurd numbers that other game developers would kill for with their premium titles.

While I didn’t really like the execution so much, I really loved the idea behind the locally developed homage to old-school beat em ups, Boet Fighter. It’s funny, sometimes poignant and, to my surprise, actually has something to say. Released on Steam last month, the game’s available on that platform for the price of a cooldrink (provided that cooldrink is for a traffic officer). Now, it’s available on mobile platforms.
