Discovery is now co-owner of ‘some’ of WB Games and DC Comics thanks to $43 billion deal

The age of the mega-merger is upon us, as communications giant AT&T has realised just how hard the world of entertainment is and has decided to flog Warner Media off to Discovery for $43 billion. That deal is likely to have some huge ramifications (and customary lay-offs) for a number of companies in the Warner Media portfolio, such as DC Comics and Rooster Teeth, as well as the company's video game division Warner Bros. Interactive.

Gearbox acquired by THQ Nordic parent Embracer Group for $1.3 billion

Gearbox Studios, developers of good games like those superb Borderlands and Homeworld titles, has just been acquired by Embracer group for a cool $1.3 billion. If the name rings a bell, it’s because Embracer happens to be the same Swedish company that owns THQ Nordic and Koch Media, publishers who have a ton of games on their resume already.

Microsoft’s been on a tear over the last few years, dropping a casual billion dollars here and there to acquire studios that can make the Xbox an RPG ecosystem not to be chuffed around with. That spending spree could have occurred a lot sooner though, as during the early days of the development of the original Xbox console, Microsoft was ready to throw money at some big names in the gaming industry.

Last month, steam rolled out its Remote Play together feature in beta, allowing those without proximity to friends to play games together over the internet. It works, and it works well enough that Valve has yanked the feature out of beta and put it into the main Steam client.

Epic launched its first great big store-wide sale yesterday in its attempt to lure over more users from Steam, but things haven’t gone as well as anybody had hoped. Initially, it all sounded pretty good! From yesterday until June 13, the Epic Games Store is offering big, store-wide discounts of up to 75% on select games, while games available for pre-order have a lovely $10 lopped off the top.
