DVD REVIEW: SOUTHPAW

Comments Off on DVD REVIEW: SOUTHPAW

Southpaw is a boxing drama that could go Toe-To-Toe with the best of them, probably landing even more jabs than most. There have been plenty of famous boxing movies made over the years, none more popular than Rocky, and they mostly follow the same recipe. The hero goes on a journey to greatness, then falls from greatness, ensues a strenuous …

Movies out Today: 4 September 2015

By Tracy Benson

In between the action of bald super-agents and unnecessary franchise continuations, we also have some drama from aging rock stars, two comedies from New Yorkers and Joburg, and Jake Gyllenhaal getting punched in the face. A lot. Agent 47 HITMAN: AGENT 47 centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and …

We review SOUTHPAW – a tame movie that throws wild punches in the hope of being original

By James

Boxing movies use a well-honed formula. I suppose we can credit Raging Bull for establishing much of that, but a great deal should also go to Rocky. Nearly every other film about pugilism (even the more recent run of MMA-themed releases) worked that blueprint to the bone. Last Updated: September 3, 2015

Tuesday Box Office Report – The Fantastic Four are doomed

IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME! The famous battlecry of Aunt Petunia favourite blue-eyed nephew was applied and then some to the latest big screen incarnation of The Fantastic Four. Opening up in a pitiful second place, Fantastic Four took home just $26.2 million in North American ticket sales. Compared to director Tim Story’s original duo of flicks from the mid-2000s, that was …

Monday Box Office Report – Your mission, should you choose to accept it

Agent Cruise, your mission should you choose to accept it, is to hit the box office and reach the number one spot. Oh, you’ve already done that? Good job Tom Cruise! Unlike several other summer tentpole movies with big, aging names attached to them, Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation did gangbuster numbers at the box office. With an opening weekend …

Movie trailers spoil too much because we want them to

Yesterday, I found myself embroiled in a heated email conversation with some friends. See, I had apparently spoiled Ant-Man for some people. In a nutshell, after checking out our awesome Ant-Man competition, a non-comic book reading friend had some queries about Hank Pym/Scott Lang. I explained that Pym was the original comic-book Ant-Man who handed over the mantle to Lang …

Monday Box Office Report – Pixels had an extra guy

By Darryn Bonthuys

Maybe there is a god, because it looked like Pixels was a massive flop at the North American box office over the weekend. Opening in second place with an estimated $24 million haul, Marvel’s Ant-Man narrowly beat Pixels to the top spot this weekend with $24.7 million taken. Opening on 3723 screens, the Adam Sandler flick failed to capitlise on …

Jake Gyllenhaal is giving his everything in this trailer for SOUTHPAW

By Nick Reay

I like to think of myself as decently built. I go to gym, I work out, and I eat reasonably well in an effort to never turn into Kervyn’s final form. So when I watch a trailer like the one for Southpaw my mind is blown by the discipline and dedication an actor like Jake Gyllenhaal must obviously have. If you just …
