The Prop Store of London will be having another one of its regular sales, and one of the items up for grabs may just be the biggest bat-grail since the mold for the bat-nipples from Batman Forever went under the hammer. What is the item in question? None other than the original batsuit, worn by Michael Keaton on the big screen in the 1989 Batman movie.

Batman may have been a serious film with dark violence and mature themes at the time, but there was one aspect of the project that made everyone find their inner child and grin with joy: The Batmobile. Not just an important weapon in Batman’s arsenal, the Batmobile was an iconic part of his history and the hottest toy of the year.

Dressing Michael Keaton up in a leotard and giving him circus trunks to wear on the outside would have ruined the illusion of the dark and Gothic world that Tim Burton was looking to create in his Batman film, forcing the director and his crew to come up with a more imaginative take on the idea of the caped crusader that didn’t just look good on camera, but also made sense within the context of that world.

Much like Superman had done back in 1978, 1989's Batman knew that it needed to cast a big name to give the project an air of legitimacy. Plenty of names may have been thrown into a casting hat, but from day one there was only one actor considered for the role: Jack Nicholson.

Michael Keaton may be seen as the definitive Batman even 30 years after his feature film debut in Tim Burton's gothic masterpiece, but his casting before the movie even began rolling still made for one heck of a controversial decision at the time.

Many people scoffed at the idea of a Tim Burton-directed Dumbo but I was excited at seeing what new things could be done. Instead, we're subjected to a scrappy script, misplaced humour and a film that has no idea what it wants to be.
