Next gen too limited for Oculus Rift

One of the more exciting technological advancements in gaming is Rift VR’s Oculus rift, a head-mounted virtual reality kit that allows for genuinely immersive experiences. there were rumours hat the tech might make its way to the PS4, but it doesn’t seem likely; according to Rift’s boss Palmer Luckey, next gen consoles aren’t powerful enough.

“Consoles are too limited for what we want to do. We’re trying to make the best virtual reality device in the world and we want to continue to innovate and upgrade every year – continue making progress internally – and whenever we make big jumps we want to push that to the public,” he told TechRadar.

“The problem with consoles in general is that once they come out they’re locked to a certain spec for a long, long time. Look at the PCs that existed eight years ago. There have been so many huge advances since then. Now look at the VR hardware of today. I think the jump we’re going to see in the next four or five years is going to be massive.”

The Rift needs to be “rendering at high resolutions at over 60 frames a second in 3D,” and so far, it seems that the new consoles are barely capable of hitting those rates in 2D.

“We’re seeing games that are already saying they’re gonna run in 720p on next gen so they can barely hit 60 in 2D,” Luckey said.

“It’s hard to imagine them running a VR experience that’s on par with PC. And certainly five years from now the experiences and the technology for virtual reality that will be available on PC is going to be be so far beyond anything that a console can provide.

“What we’re most excited about – really the core direction of our company – is trying to make something that works on platforms that are moving quickly and that are continuously getting more powerful, and consoles are not those.”

I went eyeballs on with the Rift earlier this year, and rather enjoyed the experience. There are some issues with the tech right now, but in the future, it could most certainly change the way games are played. and quite probably revolutionise the adult entertainment industry.

If Virtual Reality isn’t ready for next-gen then it’ll never be ready. It’s been 25 years since the first sods promised the power of full optical illusion, with head tracking etc. It’s now 2013. VR is a lie! Just like the cloud.

Do you have the the Oculus Rift?………….no? So judging the rift in your case is irrelevant. Come back with a real opinion once u tried the rift, There is a good reason that these people have endorsements with the Rift, Because they see it as a massive improvement over past failed VR headsets. I respect their opinion over yours.

Yep, that proves it, the Oculus Rift is a lie! I remember back when the virtual boy was going to be the big thing. Shoe (I think) had this massive article in EGM about how awesome it was going to be, and it also listed a number of big shots at the time who lauded the thing.

Just because a bunch of rich technophiles and industry types love it doesn’t mean that it’ll work in practice. Take Kinect as an example. The promise of “different” kind of gaming still exists, and yet, it still can’t come close to a keyboard and a mouse or a controller.

Virtual boy? VR tech back then was no where near what it is today, THATS the major difference with this Oculus Rift, and the way they created this VR headset is different from the past failed ones. As for kinect, that was doomed on day one, cuz body tracking is extremely difficult. VR is simple, two screens for each eye, with specially curved lenses to create immersion and head tracking.

lol, Take a look at the old Popular Mechanics articles during the 90s about VR, and then read about the current “craze”. It’s hilarious. Very little has changed. It’s just a fad. 5 years from now, VR will be dead again, only to be resurrected 15 years from now.

          • Maxiviper117

            November 13, 2013 at 13:49

Refinement …….is the word your missing, those VR headset back then are no where near as good as it is now with the Rift.

These rift creators are not idiots, they not going to make the same mistakes that the previous VR headsets did, Everyone is entitiled to an opinion but i dont respect opinion unless its based on fact. You have not used the Oculus Rift so you have no idea what its like, regardless of how many articles in the past 20 years you’ve read about failed ones. Come back when youve used one, then create a constructive opinion based on experience and not the ability to read articles

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            November 13, 2013 at 13:58

I never said they were idiots, nor did I say that the engineers working on VR 25 years ago were idiots. VR just doesn’t work as a commercial product. It’s too expensive, and more importantly, it’s a niche tech. You and I might love it, but Joe Casual Gamer couldn’t be bothered. He/she far too happy playing Call of Duty 78 followed up with Madden 278.

You don’t have to respect my opinion dude, but sadly for you, I’m rarely wrong. Yes, It’s a terrible curse. I carry it every day. I’m just.. so damn.. smart! sniff sniff!

            November 13, 2013 at 14:05

Q: Is the old perception of VR a problem? People have memories of the last time around when it wasn’t very good…

Palmer Luckey: That’s because it was overhyped, it wasn’t as possible to deliver an experience that was as good as what they promised and I think we’re getting… we’re not going to deliver a Matrix quality experience but I do think we’re getting to the point where we can deliver an experience that people are at least happy with. Like they try and they’re like ‘oh this is good’ as opposed to before you tried it and it was definitely bad, bad and not good.

Laird Malamed: Wider field of view is a key piece, that’s something that today’s screens and the optical development can get us.

Palmer Luckey: And games look good, you can make good looking games that are running at a high frame rate and not these vector graphics that are running really laggy and at a low frame rate. No matter how hard people tried to make VR work ten or 20 years ago, it was just not going to impress the average consumer.

Laird Malamed: And Palmer should know because he has the world’s largest collection of VR…

Palmer Luckey: 56 unique units now.

            November 13, 2013 at 14:11

What else is Palmer Lucky supposed to say? “Hey guys, I’m trying to sell a product here, so instead of being positive about it, I’m going to tell you the truth about VR and how it just never came to be… shoot darn it!”

That’s a completely different argument. What we’re discussing is the viability of VR, rather than people KNOWING that a product will fail and yet still move forward with releasing it. Two very separate issues.

Nope, because assumptions of intent about someone’s comment does not validate a point. The problem isn’t my comment, but your understanding of it. Since I never said they were idiots, nor implied it.

The fact that there’s a buzz surrounding the Oculus Rift also doesn’t mean that it will be a success nor the fact that they have $16 million in the bank. Do you know how much THQ lost via uDraw? Take a guess. Guess how much they were in the green before uDraw?

        November 13, 2013 at 12:58

Not sure where you get off attacking other peoples opinion. Even if you have played the Rift it will still be only your opinion and if not your opinion is only based on the people that are involved. Those same people will move on if it becomes clear that it is not financially viable. Unfortunately the VR development track record speaks for itself.
Having said that, the VR technology is amazing and I hope that one day we will get to use it for more than just a gimmick for games.

That is exactly the problem. You cannot even make a descent game for $16mil let alone develop new technology.
Maybe they will follow the American way:
Throw money at it till it works.
Still not working? – Throw money at the PR dep till the consumer believes it works
Still not selling? – Sweeten the deal. Here you already have the mask you can have the mouthpiece for free. Yes free! Very handy in case of nuclear fallout. But that’s not all, if you buy now we will include this funky colour coded earpieces so you can listen to your favourite music while the world dies!
