PlayStation 4 ahead despite stock constraints

The victor in the silly next-gen “war” is far to early to call; The Xbox One is only available in 13 territories, and the PS4 has yet to be released in its native Japan. It’s expected though, that as per usual, Sony’s machine will clean up in Japan and Europe, with Microsoft’s console taking its own home crown in the North Americas. It appears – at a cursory glance – though, that Sony may have won gamers over, and currently enjoys a sales advantage.

According to market analysts Baird and Co (via VG247), who’ve rifled through GameStop sales date and then very probably jumped to conclusions, The PlayStation 4 has a slight sales advantage in the US, despite the system’s lack of general availability in the region.

“Sony’s PS4 clearly bounced back from our mixed early-2013 supply chain checks, and appears to have a slight momentum edge among core gamers, as demonstrated by premium prices on eBay and persistent out-of-stock reports at retail,” says Baird and Co analyst Colin Sebastian.

“A competitive ‘two horse’ console race would be positive for software publishers and retailers if Microsoft and Sony are forced to compete aggressively for market share,” says Sebastian.

In the end though, Sony doing incredibly well in the US is a good thing for gamers – because it will force Microsoft to up its game. I feel the company’s turned the tables and perhaps become a bit complacent when its come to Xbox of late, with little to no worthwhile exclusives, and leaving it up to third parties to sell its consoles for them. Microsoft making a bigger push would in turn make Sony work just that bit harder – and gamers on either side of the fence end up with better games, products and services. All of that means people spend more money on games, and everybody wins.

I still believe Sony caught MS off guard with the PS4’s launch in 2013, and MS had to wrap up what they had and get it to market.

I do want both consoles to do well, because a lack of competition is never a good thing for anyone. That said, I won’t be buying a XBone. I’m happy with my PS4 and keeping my PS3.

      Gotta agree here.

I also still strongly believe MS has been playing patch up ever since the Sony release when they realised they had just made a mistake with all their DRM and online requirements.

I just hope Sony is still around in two year’s time and can show all these financial speculators a nice brown nose in the process.

Remember that new consoles generally don’t make any serious money during the first cycle and Sony also has a bunch of other divisions that are not always so profitable. But I hope that both new consoles do well.

I do get all of that, but a strong Sony will result in strong support for the PS4 and vice versa. I still think Sony should split their electronics from their other businesses but if the rumours persist that Sony will go bankrupt, a lot of people will not buy any Sony product and that’s bad for competition.

Yes we need a strong Sony for gaming and I agree on your comments regarding if the brand goes belly up then people will avoid all Sony products regardless of where they sit.

I’m a huge fan of my PS4. It’s actually my first real console purchase (the PS3 was my sisters and I was given a wii). This time round I bought the console that I wanted.

IDK which side is true, but I can tell you that in my local Best Buy, The PS4 is out of stock, but the XBOX One is not. Super easy to get an XBOX.

It defies comprehension that MS should choose to delay the launch in Asia by the full year. It seems like a insane bet. Seems like a nail in the coffin for the bone at least in these parts.

they both have about the same hardware specs but i think the deal breaker for us in US has been that xbox one is $100 expensive because of the silly kinect that most people do not care about. personally for me i play Fifa and most of the good fifa online gamers are from EU, almost every fifa gamer will buy a PS4 in Europe

There’s a pretty significant difference in specs. That’s why Microsoft NEEDS to include that janky camera with every box. It’s all they’ve got.
