Twitter is updating its web interface

I’m not a huge fan of twitter – or social media in general. The only reason I have Facebook is because it’s an easy way to connect with family and the only reason I have twitter is because… I actually can’t remember. If you follow me you will know that if I do post anything, it’s normally just an article reference, otherwise I sporadically spread a few likes around. I honestly don’t have the time to keep up with all the news and so for the most part, it’s a profile that sits there vacant – afraid to switch off from the internet world just in case it’s needed.

But, if you’re not like me, then you will probably be glad to know that Twitter’s web interface is changing. Twitter posted an update where they revealed that some new emoji buttons, keyboard shortcuts, search features plus other minor visual upgrades will be coming its way to web users in the near future, with select users already getting access to the new interface.

The general approach from Twitter here appears to be a neatening up of the interface to make it easier and cleaner for users to interact on their site. Something which I’m sure will come in handy for the 10 of you who don’t have an app installed on their phone which they prefer to use for interaction anyway.

It’s not clear exactly how the new interface can be opted in or out of and how they selected people for the trial version, but it’s probably based on usage patterns that they have already identified. It’s unlikely to make me want to use Twitter any more than I already do. I’m still waiting for the feature where they implement a cursory IQ test before being allowed an account, then it might be something I’ll try more. Or not, because I might fail that too.

I don’t get all the hate that Twitter is receiving. If someone posts something that irks/offends you, then unfollow. I only have a handful following and my twitter experience is great. The new design is something that you can choose to switch on/off from your accounts page. But liking it, so won’t be switching back. I also like the new reddit. Facebook can GITFS for all that I care, just using it to stay in contact with a few friends/family that live far away from me.

Would have said this myself. Twitter is largely what you make of it, and it has some great features for certain lifestyles.

It also helps if you don’t think of it as a free-speech platform and just use it as a news aggregator.

I don’t use it any more because it’s too restrictive.

I have exactly 38 people on my Facebook account. The only reason I still have one is that my mom will think I’m dead if I don’t keep it active. Small price to pay for something I hardly ever log into.

I complain about it a lot. but I am on there a lot lately. Work has been slow these last two and a half months. Still prefer Twitter and Reddit to pretty much everything else in terms of social media. Except maybe youtube.

I like Reddit too, but only because it reminds me of what the internet was before the excesses of Web 2.0. What we have now seems to attract the mentally ill, people with ego issues and very dangerous individuals.

Do you mean that reddit attracts the mentally ill, people with ego issues and very dangerous individuals, or just the internet in general now? Browsing r/southafrica can perhaps be an example of the abovementioned categories of people XD. But like twitter, if you find that a subreddit bothers you, then unsubscribe. problem solved, then just sub something else that is fascinating like r/BreadStapledToTrees or r/BirdsArentReal haha
