Warner Bros and DC Comics are on a mission to transform popular opinion about Aquaman and make him the real muscle behind The Justice League. Casting the muscular Jason Momoa in the lead role was obviously a big part of showing this, but director James Wan wants to make sure this notion is further shown in the characters solo films. And as part of keeping up that tough guy slate they need an incredible villain to play the part and Wan is hoping he has found that man in Patrick Wilson, who has been cast as Orm.

The news came from Deadline and will see Wilson returning to the DC Universe after Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, in which he played The Night Owl. In that movie though he played the role of a conflicted and reluctant superhero who doesn’t really want o get engaged in the battle. This time, as Orm, he will be the instigator of trouble. Wan has previously directed Wilson in The Conjuring and Insidious films, so the two already have a solid history of working together.

Who’s Orm you may ask, while he is only Aquaman’s notorious half-brother. In the numerous comics and animated incarnations Orm has shown himself to be the real nemesis behind the more noble intentions of Aquaman and intent on trying to interfere and pretty much cause trouble in every way possible.

In fact, as you may have already figured out from that explanation, Aquaman and Orm pretty much serve the same role that Thor and Loki play in the Marvel comics and films. With Loki being the only real decent villain that Marvel has served us, maybe Wilson as Orm could provide a similarly charismatic turn at the villain in this film. And Wilson certainly fits the billing for that. He is a lot less brawn than Momoa, but the right character to play a villain who is all about using his cunning and wit to overcome the hero.

Wan has previous mentioned that he loves the villains in the Aquaman story and this was one of the things which drew him towards directing the film. So, I have a lot of faith that Wan will put a lot of emphasis in developing both Orm and whoever else will play their part as bad-guys in the movie right. Nothing makes you want ot root for the good guy more than a truly remarkable bad guy.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this Aquaman movie. It’s got some great casting with Amber Heard also on-board as Queen Mera and with Wan promising a swashbuckling action-adventure quest story in the vein of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone  we could certainly be in for a treat if it all plays out like he describes.

We still have a while to go for this film as Warner Bros is next releasing Wonder Woman and The Justice League before we look into the world of Aquaman. However, that just gives us more time to get hyped and hopefully by the time the film comes around – we would’ve already had that excellent DC Comic movie that their cinematic universe needs and that will make us excited for the rest of the films.

Aquaman is scheduled to hit theatres on October 5, 2018.
