Roadies is the upcoming comedy-drama series set to air on premium cable channel Showtime from writer-director Cameron Crowe – the man behind such hits as Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire – that follows the road crew of a touring rock band.
Crowe has a wealth of experience when it comes to the behind-the-scenes happenings of famous bands as, in addition to his feature work, he’s produced documentaries on the likes of Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This should infuse the show with a healthy dose of accuracy, and he’s sure to be ably assisted in the task with a cast headlined by Carla Gugino, Luke Wilson and
British McBritishname Imogen Poots.
The plot synopsis, courtesy of Slashfilm, is as follows:
Roadies gives an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of “roadies” who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way. The music-infused ensemble comedy series chronicles the rock world through the eyes of music’s unsung heroes and puts the spotlight on the backstage workers who put the show on the road while touring the United States for a successful arena-level band.
The first word that springs to mind is… cheese. That does looks cheesy, doesn’t it? A bunch of quirky people doing stuff and learning life lessons in the process. That’s pretty much a Crowe staple, but something he generally pulls off quite well; and given that the series is airing on Showtime – which means it doesn’t need to shy away from the less family-friendly – it’ll be interesting to see how far down the roadie rabbit hole Crowe goes. What do you think?
Showtime’s Roadies is set to air on 26 June. In addition to Gugino, Wilson and Poots, it also stars Luis Guzmán, Rafe Spall, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Branscombe Richmond and Machine Gun Kelly.
