It’s no secret that as children of whichever relevant decade in which we watched way too many cartoons, that the staff of The Movies never actually grew up. Captain Planet was one of those cartoons that warped our fragile minds, to the point where we still run around today with planeteer elemental rings.
Also Kervyn needs help, because whenever he shouts “Heart!”, he proceeds to throw actual hearts at me. A Captain Planet movie has been a Greenpeace dream for years now, ever since the cartoon series ended back in the 1990’s. And now, that dream is alive once again.
Sony Pictures is wrapping up negotiations right now for the eco-warrior movie, which starred five teenagers as they battled the evil forces of pollution using their elemental rings, combining their powers when necessary to create the green-haired champion of Earth, Captain Planet.
Sony has tasked Mark Gordon, Susan Montford and Don Murphy with producing the film according to THR, while Andrea Gianetti will oversee the entire film project. I’ve always had a fondness for the Captain Planet TV series, a fondness which was rekindled when Don Cheadle proceeded to completely abuse my nostalgia in his Funny or Die spoof of the character.
But it’s the Ted Turner version that I’m hoping will make it back to the big screen.
