Eternal Darkness successor coming to destroy your sanity

Eternals

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is one of the best games you probably haven’t played, thanks to the Gamecube’s incredibly low local penetration. Probably the last thing of worth produced by the rather beleaguered Silicon Knights, it was a survival horror that featured a rather clever “sanity meter,” that dynamically affected gameplay. It also had some of the best character development in just about any game. Good news is it’s getting a spiritual successor in Shadow of the Eternals.

The bad news? It’s a crowd-funded Kickstarter project. Crowdfunding kicks off today with stretch goals that include "future episodes, additional characters, additional platforms and in-game perks".

The game will be developed by Precursor Games, whose website doesn’t seem to be functional; always a good sign.

"We are overwhelmed by the level of interest for Shadow of the Eternals," says Precursor.

They’re looking for $1.5 Million in funding to get the project off the ground, and if they reach their funding goal, will be making the game available for PC and, curiously, the Wii U. According to IGN, Silicon Knights’ Dennis Dyack will be involved in some way.

Here’s what it’ll be about:

"When Detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest gang massacres in Louisiana state history, only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections will uncover the truth about the ‘Eternals’.

"Featuring an ensemble cast of heroes and villains, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States. Players will question the perception of reality as they try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events to progress through the adventure.

"Shadow of the Eternals will take players on a memorable journey throughout time; weaving historical fact with disturbing fiction to create an experience unlike any other."

Here’s a teaser video.

The kickstarter page, should you be interested, will go live later today. Like many of you though, I’ve grown tired of all this Kickstarter nonsense

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
