FFD: Was 2016 a great year in gaming?

FFD 2016

2016 has been marred with so many negative things. Too many celebrity deaths to count, as well as bizarre and divisive politics. But you know what has been great for me this year? Gaming. I have had some fantastic experiences with games this year.

I didn’t get to play all the games that I’d hoped to this year, but even so I got to enjoy Rise of the Tomb Raider, Stardew Valley, Crashlands, Civilization VI and I’m currently trying to stop enjoying myself to hurry up and finish Final Fantasy XV so that I can review it for all of you. In the middle of all of that, I was also playing The Witcher 3 – a game that technically isn’t from this year (unless you count the GOTY edition) but is still fantastic to play in 2016.

There were other stellar games that people have raved about this year – Uncharted 4, Watch Dogs 2, Dishonored 2, Hitman, Overwatch, the new WoW expansion, the Warfare updates, Quantum Break, Darks Souls III, Total War Warhammer, Titanfall 2… The list goes on and on. Now that I think about it, 2016 was a pretty great year for gaming.

But there were some other games that flopped or disappointed – No Man’s Sky instantly comes to mind. But even The Division didn’t have the longevity people were hoping for (although the new update might have fixed that). Call of Duty sales have been lackluster, and even the toys to life genre seems to be a bit, um, lifeless.

Was 2016 redeemed by all the awesome gaming on offer, or was that just another source of tragedy this year? What were you gaming highs and lows this year?

Wielding my lasso of truth, I am the combination of nerd passion and grammar nazi. I delve into all things awesome and geek-tastic. I believe people should stop defining themselves and just enjoy playing games, so let's get on with it!

  • I spent A LOT on games this year. I would say it was pretty successful.

  • VampyreSquirrel

I honestly don’t know because I didn’t play most of the releases of 2016.

However I had a blast playing games during 2016.

    • Captain JJ

I only got Deus Ex MD as a 2016 release as far as I recall and it was quite disappointing. The other games I played throughout the year, however, were great.

      • VampyreSquirrel

I got… ummmm… Stardew Valley, and the Division Survival DLC.

        I think that’s it.

        Oh and Lego: Marvel’s Avengers.

        • You forget Overwatch

          • VampyreSquirrel

Feels like I’ve been playing that for over a year already 😛

          • You got it on your birthday or just like a few days before it 😛

          • VampyreSquirrel

Something like that yeah… I can’t remember that far back.

  • The crappiest blows to this years gaming was buying NMS and losing Warframe to stupid dev decisions.

    • Lu

Been out of Warframe for a while. Thought of starting up again. What stupid decisions?

      • They removed void keys. The void tileset is redundant now. They added fissures where you pic up balls to open relics (that contain prime gear now) and you have to upgrade that relic to max or else no group invite for you.

        • Lu

Damn I had a large stockpile of keys 🙁

          • And grinding for the correct relic takes forever. You get sick of excavation missions fast.

          • Lu

I hated excavation from the start. At least that’s one less game I need to play.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Those will be converted to relics, but new prime gear is released with new relics, so you can’t stockpile in advance.

          • This was what made me just give up in the end xD

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Yeah I’m not impressed by that either. It’s a pretty blatant cash grab move. But I don’t need to rush for new prime gear, it’ll come when it comes.

          • Viking Of Science

All your Keys were converted to appropriate relics

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

They fucked over endless void farming (although partially fixed now), increased the grind to get “keys” by replacing keys with relics, and released weapons & frames with stupidly high resource requirements.

    • Theo JK

Got NMS on release day, first ever pre-order! Thou shalt not pre-order ever again!!

    • 40 Insane Frogs

      🙁 Aye!

  • Indies have been a roller coaster this year with some getting greedy and others dropping gems out of nowhere.

    • Captain JJ

Yea. The ARK guys just lost it, and lost my respect, but some of the others came out with some real gems.
The updates on the Early Access games I have were also very impressive for nearly all.

    • Lu

Planet Explorers is finally out of early access, so I suppose that counts as a 2016 release. Still gotta give that a try.

      • I am still recovering from the space explorers genre 😛

        • Lu

Haha PE is stuck on one planet, deformable terrain ec. Got one of the coolest voxel based item design systems I’ve seen.

Like I made a vtol aircraft in the shape of a damn phoenix. Put a battleship cannon on a buggy.

  • Captain JJ

I think 2016 had some really big high’s, a few disappointments and then No Man’s Sky.

    • NMS is like a category of it’s own when it comes to utter kak games.

      • Captain JJ

I still think it has the potential to be worth a great deal…with a few updates and a $15 price tag.

        • Umar

Agree. I wish it were cheaper. It’s a ‘bad’ game, and there’s lots of potential, but it almost feels like it should’ve been early access

          • Captain JJ

If it were $15 and Early Access I’d buy it today.

          • I would not

          • Captain JJ

I get a lot of fun out of exploration games, I’m weird like that. XD

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

That’s not the only way you’re weird!

          • Captain JJ

            Yea. I’m friends with you!

    • konfab

Have you tried the new update?

It solves quite a few problems I had with it.

      • Does it auto delete off the HDD now? 😛

        • konfab

          Tsek! 😛

      • Captain JJ

I didn’t buy it. Not yet anyway. Waiting for a decent price drop first.

  • DragonSpirit009

Well I couldn’t play a lot of games this year but damn… I added a lot of new game on my “want to play list”

  • Viking Of Science

I Mean DOOM happened and this: https://youtu.be/5a9E3n_VZRQ

    • MonsterCheddar

      AWESOME AF.

    • Captain JJ

Yea. And Doom is already on sale this year at an incredible price. Definitely getting that over Christmas.

      • Matthew Holliday

rarus having a sale where its the optional extras when you buy an xbone + fifa for R3999
        I was a little tempted

        • Captain JJ

          That’s really not bad

  • Umar

From a JRPG perspective, fantastic year. FFXV, BD3, DQB, DQ7, IAS, FE:F…
And yes, I just wanted to list a whole bunch of acronyms.

    • Original Heretic

      Those aren’t acronyms.

      • Umar

        Abbreviation, soz.

        • Original Heretic

No probs, it’s a common mistake people make.

Gawd, I just grammar Nazi’d you! Sorry, Umar!

          • Umar

Now I’m crying, are you happy, ARE YOU HAPPY?? Clap your hands if yes.

          • Original Heretic

Well if that’s how you’re going to react…

You shouldn’t use double questions marks, it’s very incorrect. And your use of commas also needs looking at. And really now, three words in row in capital letters? You’re better than that, I know you are.

Whew! Weight off my shoulders. I feel happy now. Can I clap now?

          • Matthew Holliday

            you grammar nazid him haaaaaard

  • MonsterCheddar

I really still dig The Division. I played that for most of the year and I still love Survival. Based on Facebook Groups there is still a lot of console love for this game. DOOM, Overwatch and then of course, the gem that is Titanfall 2. Will check out COD over the holidays. BF1? Meh. Not until servers happen.

    • It got boring fast. I mean Survival breathed some new life into it but …. meh.

  • Original Heretic

I play games every year and every year I have a blast. Gamer for life!

    • MonsterCheddar

That’s the way it should be.

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

I was a bit disappointed with Rise of the Tomb Raider – the game play was great but the story was kinda crappy, first one was way better.

Witcher 3 Blood & Wine was fantastic & the ending was a perfect good bye.

And while not a 2016 game I was very happy with Tales From the Borderlands – it was funny, good story, and even had a moment or two of feels.

    • Nikola

I agree 100% with you when it comes to TB 2 first was better story wise, but I really enjoyed the gameplay and all the puzzles of the second one actually finished it 100% but I would still take the first one over it.

    • Captain JJ

Rise of the Tomb Raider was a timed exclusive, so I’m waiting until a decent sale.
      #neverforget

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

I did, got it for cheap during the mid year sale.

        • Captain JJ

Oh wait. I see it’s not on my wishlist. That’s how I missed that XD

  • konfab

    I would say so.

Remember gaming isn’t just the new games that come out. It is the games that people play and that is directly tied to PS+. From that aspect I got a lot of entertainment.

2017 is going to be a biggie for me though with the new Mass Effect.

    • Nikola

I literally want to get a PS4 Pro and a 4K TV next year just for that game… I wasn’t keen on it but after seeing ne ME I want to play it in 4K

  • Nikola

I think it was a really great gaming year: DOOM, Uncharted 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2 all stellar games especially Uncharted 4 could be one of my favorite games of all time!

    • konfab

Yup. Uncharted 4 is just about the most complete game I have played this year.

    • Umar

How could I forget WD2. One of the best surprises of the year.

      • Nikola

I forgot Final Fantasy XV which is amazing! Also been enjoying new Digimon game not sure you played it since you into JRPG but it’s bloody awesome!

        • Never miss a Digimon game!

          • Nikola

            Love Digimons hahaha!!

        • Umar

Cyber Slueth? Of course I played it lol Love that game, still trying to get Beelzemon though. Almost there on my evolution path.

          • I had to put mine on hold. So much games are dropping now I can’t keep up.

          • Umar

Yup, same, I wanna go back though, at least before the new one drops.

          • Nikola

Yeah brilliant!! My brother is obsessed with it he has like 160 hours he literally has/had every bloody Digimon he is insane!!

          • Umar

Whoooa nice one lol I see another one is dropping next year too so I guess you have to say your goodbyes to your bro 😀

  • Gareth Lagesse (eXCheez)

This year has been excellent (too damn expensively excellent!) for gaming. DOOM (4), Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Forza Horizon 3, Overwatch, Inside, XCOM 2, The Division, Uncharted 4, Quantum Break… jeez!

  • Admiral Chief Argonian

    *burps*

Oh my, looks like I joined the convo too late, already well over 50 comments.

    *goes back to party*

    • Bruce Bielie

Dans jou [email protected] af met Jurie Els volume 34?

  • ElimiNathan

I hardly played any games this year. Far too busy 🙁

  • We had DOOM,Rise of the Tomb Raider,Overwatch and a few other notables. And the only people who will complain are those who got overhyped for a game that no one knew any solid details off. If you are one of those people who think 2016 was a bad gaming year because you did not see the long con that was NMS then you have only yourself to blame.

  • Walking Dead season 3 will be the clencher for me since it technically is still released this year.

    • Isn’t that a series?

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

It’s a TV series AND a game series. And the games are awesome. 😛

      • Game is better MUCH better than the series.

I mean everyone is was hyping on Life is strange and there I was crying and not being able to make that one terrible choice in season 1.

  • Magoo

It was an expensive year for gaming. Maybe it was great in terms of content, but I wouldn’t know. Because I couldn’t afford most of it.

  • Bruce Bielie

At the risk of sounding stuck… Skyrim Remaster was the best thing to happen to my Console and then my PC.

Other than that, I cannot really think of a game that was like WOOOOWWWWOOOEEEOOWEEEEEE.
    Mebbe Doom…

  • R1ker

The only one of 2016 I actually played was Overwatch. Not buying games on release that often anymore.

  • 40 Insane Frogs

Zoe, 2016 has been an awesome year all round; this has been THE year of gaming, and it’s made me a happier person. 😀

    All hail Gaming!
