It's the JACK REACHER trailer…. Now in English!

So on Monday Darryn used his special geek powers for personal gain, by working around Paramount’s draconian web police and acquiring a Russian language trailer for Tom Cruise’s next film, Jack Reacher. Unfortunately, like most things that sneak out of Russia, while it hinted at some good looking action, it was low quality and pretty unintelligible.

Luckily for us, Paramount has now officially released a decent quality version of it in ye olde English!

While I am personally not familiar with Lee Child’s literary character, I will echo the concerns of the fans of the books. Firstly, Jack Reacher is supposed to be a 6ft5′ 250 pound, blonde hair, blue eyed tank of a man, whereas Cruise is so short, his hair smells like feet. Also, this trailer is certainly very car-centric, apparently in an attempt to cash-in on Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling’s superb Drive. There’s just one slight problem. In the books, Reacher infamously hates driving. He doesn’t even have a licence and prefers walking or using public transport.

Now personally, while I have no problem with changes being made in adaptation, those changes cannot be to such an extent that you’re removing what was initially appealing. Reacher’s monstrous, immovable build and stoic nature is apparently a huge part of his character. At this point, it looks like besides for the name, there is nothing really attaching this on-screen version to its source.

All of that being said though, Tom Cruise is a pretty dependable action star and this certainly looks like the recent half-centurion (he turned 50 yesterday) will be bringing his A-game once again.

Synopsis:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter—a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right—and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning—and then beat him shot for shot.

I’ve read some of the Jack Reacher novels, and this is not at all what I pictured. Not even close.

The movie will probably be a solid action film and worth watching, but I gotta say that I’m massively disappointed with the changes to Reacher’s character. Now having seen Cruise in the role a little bit it looks even more disappointing than it did on paper – it looks as convincing as Macaulay Culkin being cast as Gandalf. Such a pity really.

I’ve never read any of the books and didn’t actually know about them so I’m going to be one of the lucky ones who can enjoy this movie I guess
