The remake machine takes off again with FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR

Morning, folks! We’ve had much to say about Hollywood’s blood lust for remaking old classics, ruining childhood memories and worst of all, a worryingly low level of creativity. Well, another beloved childhood film is about to cash in on our childhood nostalgia and it turns out the be quite an unexpected one.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, Flight of the Navigator, released in 1986, deals with a young boy that gets abducted by an alien ship only to be returned to the same spot 8 years later in what he remembers as only an instant. A series of events sees him piloting the same ship that abducted him, trying to escape from NASA’s clutches.

I have very fond memories regarding the film – it captured lightning in a bottle in a very Spielberg-esque way, with the same  spirit of adventure you might find in most Amblin films. I’m quite convinced that any form of remake will turn the film into a CGI extravaganza with no heart, and with the trend of other remakes these days it seems quite likely.

However, since the film is slightly more obscure than other childhood classics, perhaps a remake could do it justice? Writers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly have been attached to the project and Trevorrow is a self-confessed fan of the original which definitely inspires some hope.

The question is this: Is Hollywood ready for a blockbuster with a special with no real weapons to speak of? Somewhere, Len Wiseman and Michael Bay are having horrible nightmares about peaceful aliens and zero explosions.

Best case scenario? Spielberg signs on to helm the project. This is highly unlikely though as Mr. Spielberg is attached to numerous other projects at the moment, including Robocalypse.

A few weeks ago there were rumours about Trevorrow being attached to Star Wars, but he quickly stated that the rumours were incorrect.  He mentioned that he was attached to another project with a big existing fanbase, which has now turned out to be Flight of the Navigator, and not just as writer but he seems a likely choice to helm the film as director as well.

All that said, I’m calling it – the next film getting the remake treatment will be Batteries Not Included.  Ouch! Right in the childhood.
