Christopher Nolan talks MAN OF STEEL, calls it the biggest possible movie version of Superman

2013 looks set to be a great year for superhero movies once again. In May, you’ve got the armoured avenger Iron Man returning for a third outing, while November sees the Asgardian Goldilocks start another round of hammer time in Thor: The Dark World.

And between them, you have the original man in spandex, Superman returning. And according to producer Christoper Nolan, this big screen version will be massive, and far more distinct than that other film which starred a man with parenting issues dressed up as a flying rat.

Usually more secretive than Johnny Tight-Lips, Christopher Nolan spilled some beans on the Zack Snyder directed reboot of Man of Steel. Presumably while The Playlist hung the Dark Knight director over a ledge (Citation needed).

Speaking about the style of the film, Nolan said that Man of Steel wasn’t Dark Knight Rises with the big blue boy scout instead of Batman;

I wouldn’t want people to think we’re doing for Superman what we did for Batman. It’s very much Zack’s film and I think people are going to love what he’s done. I think it’s really remarkable to take on that character.
Superman is a completely different character than Batman. So you can’t in anyway use the same template. But David Goyer had this, I thought, brilliant way to make Superman relatable and relevant for his audience.
Zack has built on that and I think it’s incredible what he’s putting together. He’s got a lot of finishing to do on that. Superman is the biggest comic book character of them all and he needs the biggest possible movie version which is what Zack’s doing. It’s really something.

“Biggest possible movie version”. Knowing Snyder, than that’s a bombastic approach that he can most likely pull off with style. And honestly, it’s something that audiences would love, compared to that sole epic scene from Superman Returns that had the hero flinging an island into space.

As for Justice League, which Warner Bros is working on getting done, Nolan was quizzed on whether or not he’d like to oversee that project or any other Batman future film, Joss Whedon style;

Well, as I’ve said, and I’ll say definitively again, I am done with the Batman films, the trilogy is completed. It ended in the manner we had envisioned.

But would Nolan ever sit down to direct another superhero film then, that did not star the caped crusader?

Well, I’m producing Superman now and I’m enjoying time off and taking a break. (Said with a smile as the article noted.)

It’s not too difficult to imagine Nolan entering the land of capes and tights again, but honestly, it won’t happen for quite a few years. Still, which hero would you like to see Nolan take charge of next?

Personally, I’d love to see Nolan’s take on Squirrel Girl…

  1. I’m not the biggest fan of Nolan as he doesn’t stay true to his source material… so as long as its nothing to do with Marvel, he can keep at it 😛

    I predict lots of Slow-Mo scenes…

      This is my biggest fear. Not necessarily the slow-mo in itself, but rather Snyder’s tendency to sometime focus on the visuals more than the substance.

      If it was up to me, I would rather have given Snyder Green Lantern and had Martin Campbell do Man of Steel, but based on the trailers and snippets we’ve seen it looks like this may just be Snyder showing off a new wrinkle in his game.
