Say goodbye to DEXTER after season 8

It’s been a long and exhausting ride for good ol’ Dexter. Keeping dem knives sharp, collecting blood samples and trying his best to fit into modern society while having the mindset of a killer with unnatural urges. The show has been a round for a while now, and anyway you spin it, there’s only so much that you can do with a serial killer.

Which is why season 8 will most likely be the last we see of the Bayside Butcher.

CBS Head Les Moonves confirmed in an investor meeting that Dexter would be bowing out after the upcoming season. It’s been a popular show, but one that ran out of steam during it’s middle seasons, before a critically acclaimed seventh year garnered some rave reviews for the series. It’s that very popularity that has kept the show running for so long.

Back in December, executive producer Scott Buck confirmed this as well, saying that while they had managed to write in a loophole for a possible return, season 8 would draw the curtain on Dexter:

We are absolutely writing it with an end in sight, but if we get told otherwise somewhere along the way, we’ll take it in a different direction. But we are definitely working toward the finale of the series. We are indeed, yes.

So what is Showtime going to have on their plate then, to replace the mega-popular show? Well, turns out that they have plenty, according to Moonves;

Ray Donovan is coming on with Liev Schreiber which comes on with Dexter‘s last season starting in June. And then we have Masters of Sex, a story of Masters and Johnson, which is a very exciting show. A show that you wouldn’t see on CBS but it works on Showtime. And that comes behind Homeland in September. And just announced, we’re doing a series about the Vatican, which I think is rather timely, which Ridley Scott is directing for us. So we’re very excited about that.

The final season of Dexter arrives later this year, June 30.

      I’ve actually never been a fan of the show. Seen the episodes, but i’ve never gone out of my way to watch them.

    After Trinity the whole thing just went downhill for me. Also, I made the happy mistake of reading the books, which stick to the original spirit of the series. Dexter in the show gradually becomes more ‘human’. Dexter in the books remains your friendly neighborhood psychopath.
