Friday Fright Club – Urban Legend

2 min read

Happy Friday, horror fans!  Today I’m going to have a chat to you all regarding a horror film that falls more under the “guilty pleasure” catagory, but definitely one worth mentioning: Urban Legend.

Back in the late 90’s we saw the rebirth of the Slasher flick, with films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer combining the standard slasher formula with teen icons like Neve Campbell or Jennifer Love Hewitt, both popular for their particular set of talents which naturally included wearing tank tops and screaming quite loudly. From this new wave of horror we saw the birth of many franchises, but one of my particular favourites has always been Urban Legend.

While the other popular slashers were obsessed with being meta, Urban Legend decided to opt to exploit 20th century superstitions and folklore for its thrills and it worked beautifully. Not only did we not have to watch the same scary mask with the same scary knife run around similar houses every few minutes, we were drawn into a set of murders each more twisted that the last, with most of us viewers playing a game of “spot the urban legend”. Thanks to Urban Legend, I still check the back seat of my car when I get in at night… I also wish I was kidding.

While not the most terrifying film on my list, it definitely is a bloody good time and as with the other 90’s slashers, its cast was quite easy on the eye as well. Alicia “Alia Atreides” Witt, Jared Leto, Rebecca “Every teenage boy’s fantasy” Gayheart, Tara Reid and Michael “Lex Luthor” Rosenbaum and Joshua Jackson all contribute to making this film a lot more classy than it could, and should have been. We are even treated to a cameo by Robert Englund, better known as the original Freddy Krueger.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of nostalgia,  a surprisingly fun slasher and a generous amount of college kids being murdered then you’re in for a treat! Give it a whirl folks, it is as guilty a pleasure as they come. Just a bit of advice: Under no circumstances should you ever watch the sequels.
