You may not be able to see it, but trust me, right now my lip movements are totally not matching the words that you’re reading . I actually type all my posts in “kung fu movie dubbing”, that’s how much I love the genre.

And easily one of the highlights (and with much better dubbing) was Ang Lee’s Oscar winning Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which put the “art” back in martial arts. Thirteen years later, a sequel is finally being made, and now we finally know who’s punching who.

THR is reporting that Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies, Fearless) who played the wall running, brass pipe hitting Yu Shu Lien in the first film will be reprising her role in the sequel, which has been given the full title of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2 – The Green Destiny. “The Green Destiny”, if you may recall was the name of the highly coveted sword of Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat), the main protagonist of the first film, and the point around which much of that film’s plot revolved.

Fat won’t be reprising his role opposite Yeoh though, seeing as his character contracted a mild bout of being dead in the first film, but stepping into his leading man kung fu slippers we have arguably the finest martial arts practitioner in the movie business today, Donnie Yen (Ip Man 1 & 2, Dragon Blade II, Dragon Tiger Gate), who will be playing a new character, Silent Wolf.

Yen will also be joined on the production by an old buddy and longtime collaborator, as acclaimed martial arts fight choreographer and classic kung fu movie director Yuen Woo Ping (Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow, Drunken Master, The Matrix trilogy, Kung Fu Hustle) will be occupying the director’s chair for the sequel.

John Fusco (Forbidden Kingdom, Hidalgo, Young Guns) will be proving the script, which will be based on Wang Du Lu’s “Iron Knight, Silver Vase”, the 5th book in the “Crane-Iron Pentalogy”, which was also the literary source for the first film.

According to THR’s report, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2: The Green Destiny will start filming in March 2014, so I’d be guessing that it would only see a very late 2014/early 2015 release. So that gives you plenty of time to brush up on your “floating on a thin tree branch” skills in anticipation for the sequel, which is shaping up to kick some serious green butt.

  1. Not sure how I feel about this, CTHD is one of the few movies I’ve ever paid to see twice.
